Yes. It pointed out that much equipment is expensive and lower income households are less able to afford it. And since people of color are more likely to be in lower income brackets they are priced out.
I didn’t get the feeling the writer ever camped.

Where did the article say that ?

Any idea on how to bring in more African Americans to muzzleloading? I have many friends who are in to modern guns but I personally have never seen, or heard of in my entire life, an African American person that is into traditional muzzleloading. I find that a bit odd and am wondering what you all think?

Why do you feel the need to bring more Africans to muzzleloading? Is it a crusade you need to bear? If that is in your heart then do it. I'm sorry but I cant help on how it should be done. Maybe raise money then go to Africa and share your passion. Let me know if I can assist. Maybe the forum here could sponsor you. Best of luck my friend.

"In May, Mo Jackson was camping with a friend in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. They woke at 5 to start a fire, make breakfast and — in the midst of a pandemic — experience the peace that comes with an early morning in a secluded spot.

The beauty of that morning moved Jackson to tears. “I had the most clarifying moment. You know, I just thought, I wish everyone could feel this.”

Jackson realized that, although they could not help everyone feel more connected to nature, they could get a few more people outside by offering free camping gear. “That day I was like, OK, what can I do to get more Black people outdoors? And I thought, well, I have enough savings to get three camping kits together.

On May 19, Jackson posted on Instagram asking if any people of color wanted a free camping kit. “No need to demonstrate need or anything,” Jackson wrote. “Just ask and we can get something out to you.”

Sounds like something we would do to get people interested in muzzleloading.
Where's the bad part ?

Very nice gesture by that fella. What color is it available to? Could some backwoods po honkey take em up on his offer? Or is it only the select coloreds?

You make the error of thinking journalists are decent human beings.

They are not. Journalists and journalism is the most corrupt of all jobs, including bank robbers, serial killers and rapists.

I refuse to be judged by sub human pieces of garbage.
I'd buy you a beer or 2.

It sounds like Mo Jackson is so arrogantly racist that he feels people of color can't even start a fire. The basic need of man since the begining of time. Maybe we need a Democrat to provide fire to the colored folk.

I did a similar thing many years ago when I wanted to go backpacking but none of my friends had any gear. So I bought enough gear for a group and took them all camping.
Had a great time.
I've loaned that gear out several times.

Camping when you are already in the backwoods ?
A " backwoods po honkey" would likely benefit from a trip to the city.
It's good to get out once and a while.

I agree we should want to bring more in, and welcome all. Our history belongs to all Americans, our are woodland too.

My god, my first camping gear was a hand me down US Army pup tent (both haves fortunately) And an old cast iron skillet. What they have to be all Abercrombie to camp? Camping WAS our family vacations for all my growing years. Old stuff from auctions, stuff relatives gave away, made up the gear. I did take notice that Walmart here doesn't sell much in the way of tents. My second tent was a tiny 7x 5 wall tent from a Woolworth store for $20. It was not even tall enough to stand in. I have recently spent some time near the Chincoteague wild life refuge. I took notice that even in the camp ground, predominantly white, the $70k trucks pulling the $50k Airstreams were more like the rule. The camp grounds cost about 75% of the rate of a motel. For the difference, I stay at the motel. So do most all of the minorities visiting there. I do recall as a kid, the Delaware state seashore park was $2. a nite, for tent camping and there was a wide variety of folks camping there. Even international groups.

My father was a Captain in the US ARMY AIR CORP back in '41 and volunteered as primary command instructor, when no one else would, for the first all black pilots in Stearman biplanes, then to AT-6. No one thought they would advance further than transport pilots. When the demand for fighter pilots began in earnest, with Tusgeegee advanced command, dad recommended training in P40's, then sent to North Africa in which the black pilots excelled beyond belief...then they advanced to P51's and due to pilot shortages escorting bombers out of England...the black pilots as you now know them as Red Tails, became the best America had to off...ever!

What is really disheartening, I inherited from my dad when he passed away, all the flight records, medical records and incredible photos of the early primary training days of the black pilots, many who went on to advanced and European command... and several years ago, tried to offer them to museums, from Presidential to Smithsonian and all agreed to file them in historical records for posterity, but not one agreed to make a permanent exhibit ! As a result, I still have all those valuable records and soon I will try again!

I feel that your father's collection would be a great fit the Warhawk Museum as it focuses on WW-2 aviation & pilots of the period & the collection would be prominently displayed. I'm enclosing a link in event you would like to contact them. I loved flying the old At-6s 👍

Jeesh, if you're going to talk warbirds at least keep it relevant to the forum timeline.

******** to the tenth power....

This thread, though interesting has had several complaints from people asking me to close it.

Although most of the posts made here so far, support the idea of increasing the number of Black people involved in muzzleloading and reenacting and many members have made comments that speak highly of the idea of getting the minorities more involved, this whole subject is one that could lead to some harsh statements and lead to problems between our members.

To avoid this and to keep people from making political posts and saying things that others take issue with, I'm closing the thread.
