I had an old ax, the cheap kind you get at Lowes etc etc. I cut it down to 4 1/2 inches long and drew out the poll a 1/2 inch longer then thinned the head by about half. Reshaped the bottom and made the top flat. Heat treated retempered then made the handle. The handle is shaped from Osage orange (hedge apple). It's 13 1/4 inches long total.

Keep an eye out for old axe and hatchet heads, all kinds of possibilities.
