I recently got my fall bear hide back from the taxidermist. So now I have a nice cinnamon hide and a smaller black hide from the previous year. The coming year looks promising with plenty of bears around.

So it has me wondering what I'm going to do with yet another hide once I get it. I know what to do with the meat. But the hides, costing $300-600 to tan, I figure I should be making something useful out of these things if I'm going to accrue a few more. So besides throw rugs or other decorative uses, what else can be done with a simple black bear hide?

Try this way cheaper than what you spent it will take work on your part.

Yea, I'm not interested in doing all the hide & leather prep myself. To me, it's well worth paying my local taxidermist to scrape & prep the hide and the tannery for the finished product. I did a deer hide once -- very time intensive. My question is what to do with it after it's already a tanned hide & hanging on the wall. Ideally, something useful.
