barrel blueing or browning? Looking to simulate "french gray"

Thanks, yeah I've done that too and it came out pretty good, I was just wondering if there was an actual recipe for doing it. Pete G said about using rust remover which I know creates a gray appearance but I'm concerned about possible pitting? Maybe I'll just stick with the blueing and rub it back, safer!
 
Polished down to 400 grit, rubbed navel jelly then wiped with lamp black, wiped off and oiled, first with gun oil, wiped off the next day, mink oil, wiped off, and wiped with gun oil on every cleaning.

Yup -- Tenngun got it :thumb: -- I use the rust remover for a lighter gray look.
