Hello, inherited this "1861 Enfield" from my relative and would like to try and id it.

Ive been told it was from the Boer war?

It it british, is covered in "VR and crown stamps" but has a number pumped into the stock...."90/148". Along with a much longer barrel than most Enfield i see.

I also have the curved bayonet stamped s18 and leather sheath.

Thanks for any help. Looking to sell this in the future and any links or help is really appreciated.

Id think not so much a long barrel as a shortened stock. And I dont believe thats a bayonet there. Finally its a p53 not 56 but maybe you’re right. Those are just my guesses.

From the very few pictures difficult to tell, it possibly looks to be breech loading conversion of the muzzle loading Enfield using a Snider action. Need more pictures of lock and action. The DC in a diamond is Dominion of Canada.

It IS a Snider conversion of an Enfield rifled musket. Not only that, it is a Mk1 as shown by the breech mark. It was probably issued post-Confederation in 1867, since it has the DC stamp. The Yataghan-style bayonet is issue with the two and three-band rifles, although I've not seen one with a carbine. It is very difficult to determine whether yours is a true carbine or a cut-down done by a gunsmith. right now, given the odd angle of your photo, it has the appearance of a cut-down short rifle. Much better images in good lighting are needed before any determined resolution can be made. However, please note for reference that your post concerns a breech-loading rifle/carbine - such guns are not discussed on this muzzle-loading forum.

I advise you, in the friendliest way, to repost your article on canadiangunnutz.com or the black powder section/military weapons of gunboards.com. If you can email me your details, I can do this for you, since I post on both of these fora.
