    Springfield 1851 Cadet?

My friend came across an old gun while cleaning out her deceased mother’s home. She asked me if I could tell her anything about it. It’s a rusty old girl. The owner’s husband found “Springfield 1851” on the tail of the lock. I was able to find an eagle over “US” just in front of the hammer...

    Brain Tanned Deer Fur

I tanned a deer hide with fur on. After fleshing it, I heavily salted the hide side with kosher salt twice (two consecutive days). My understanding is that this causes the skin around the follicles to seize up and hold the hair in place before tanning. I then veg tanned it and applied Neat's...

I just ordered a Traditons Mountain rifle, anyone interested in a build post?

But then the hole is going to be off for attaching the trigger, isn't it?

I just ordered a Traditons Mountain rifle, anyone interested in a build post?

I received the Mountain Rifle kit today and was surprised/disappointed to see that they installed the buttstock plate, patchbox, and wedge escutcheons before taking a heavy grit sander to the stock. They almost took the heads off the screws and parts of the brass have deep scratches. :(

I just ordered a Traditons Mountain rifle, anyone interested in a build post?

Well heck. Got the Traditions Kentucky kit for my daughter and the Mountain Rifle kit for my son, so I guess I'll be one of your most loyal readers. I'd check that tracking number again in case they had only just created the label and also check it with USPS in case they told you the wrong...

Traditions .32 cal Crockett kit build

The Traditions Kentucky kit my daughter asked for arrived and will be under the Christmas tree. That two-piece stock troubled me when I purchased it and now I'm even more apprehensive. Please keep updating us here or on a new thread on the changes you make. The Kona stain looks terrific and...

Traditions .32 cal Crockett kit build

That would be great! I'd love to know any problems you ran into on the the original build, and now that you have more experience, what you plan to change. Thank you, friend.

Traditions .32 cal Crockett kit build

Thanks, Railshot, for making this thread and taking the time to post so many pictures. And thanks to the other folks for offering advice. I'm giving my son and daughter (they're in their 30s) the Traditions KY and Mountain flintlock kits for Christmas. We will build them together this winter...

    Any information on Campbell Cannons

Beautiful work. However, they do say that they are decorative only and neither of the casting processes that they show includes a steel sleeve in the bore.

    Natural Tinder Bundle

Just returned from a rendezvous using cottonwood cambium for tinder. It worked great. Look for a downed cottonwood tree or branch and peel back the dry bark. There will be a thin layer of hairy material between the bark and the wood. It pulls apart easily and can be wound into a nest.

    Swivel gun recoil--need help

Thank you all for your input. I was just looking for a practical way to keep the stand as it is and fire the same load. I guess my options are to put the gun on a carriage or to lighten the charge considerably (which will take me out of our club's cannon competition).

    Swivel gun recoil--need help

Top of the post is 34" from the ground. Feet are 41" inches with the post centered at 20.5". I fire it as shown with the barrel directly over the foot with the sand bag. It seemed that firing over the cross would cause it to rock back even more. Maybe I need to make my feet longer?

    Swivel gun recoil--need help

Thank you Kaintuck and Nitwit. I've been looking at pics of deck guns with breech ropes and notice that they leave slack in the ropes. Anyone know if this was the practice during firing or were the ropes drawn up tight. If slack was left in them, was it to allow some of the recoil energy to...

    Swivel gun recoil--need help

I should add that it's on a 6x6 post. I am thinking about adding a couple of iron rings to the post and running rope to tent stakes out in front.

    Swivel gun recoil--need help

Having an issue with my 1.5" swivel and keeping it upright. I fire a 1# lead ball over 500 grains and hold on to the tiller when she fires. However the recoil causes it to topple sometimes. I've tried staking the front leg and weighting it with sand bags but it's still a chore to keep it...

    Cast iron bacon and eggs

In camp, I use thick cut bacon from a local butcher and cook it slowly in a big cast iron skillet above the edge of the fire. Over the flame gets too hot. It cooks too fast and sticks. Once the bacon is done, I set the skillet over the flame to get the grease a little hotter. Then I pull the...

    Swivel gun

Thanks. I'm working on a stand of similar design. Staking it down is likely the safest thing to do. I'd love to know how yours performs when the lead flies.
