How'd you get your start in gun building?

Thought I'd throw this out there out of curiousity: For those of you who build guns, did you get started by repairing, scratch building, a kit? What was the learning curve like for you?

A card laid is a card played

Congrats - Definitely post pics - Sitting Fox is one of the makers I'm considering a kit from.

    Numrich/Hopkins and Allen "The Off-Hand"

I must say this is a more positive response than I thought I'd get. I expected to be warned away... Can anyone tell me more about these guns? When were they made for example? BTW - the gun has a really short barrel - kinda looks like a single barrel coach gun.

    Numrich/Hopkins and Allen "The Off-Hand"

Not really my thing, but I was offered one in a junk store for $150. Appears to be missing the nipple the cap goes on, also the ramrod (no big deal there). Looks to be .45 cal or so. Any info on this?

Very frustrating range experience with my flintlock

Gotta agree with you there I use it to bleach skulls and bones (don't ask). All the above advice is great - found myself nodding my head at most of it. Only have one tip to add: If your rifle has an easily removable barrel, take it off after the day's shooting and remove the touch hole liner...

    Buckskin question

I'd like to make a pair of Eastern Woodland soft soles. I've been watching Michael Galban's dvd and have made practice pairs from felt. Moose leather is supposed to be great stuff, but again, expensive.

    Buckskin question

I'm looking to get a hide or so for a couple of projects I have in mind - moccasins and a possibles bag for starters. I'm not exactly sure what type of buckskin to get or where to buy it. I can't really afford to purchase a braintanned hide right now - what other quality options are there? I'd...

    Clean a clay pipe?

Hear, hear! Quit smoking cigarettes a few years ago cause it was killing me. If I could only stick to just the pipe... I digress - I had luck with my clays by putting them in a gas oven on the self-clean cycle. Came out nearly new; I believe the term is "vitrified". If you have access to one of...

Fort Ti 250th F&I War Battle

Dagnabit... I manage to make it up to Ti once a year, but somehow manage to miss the reenactment. Was introduced to the fort when I was a kid - one of these days I'm going to retrace Robert Rogers' route from Crown Point. Glad y'all had a good time.

    Flintlock hunting guides in Adirondacks?

I'm looking for advice and recommendations here - new hunter, haven't taken a deer yet. Don't care about trophies, just the experience and want my first buck or antlerless to be w/my .50 flinter. Now I'll just sit back and learn while y'all discuss it :)

    Big game vs small game

As a new hunter (didn't grow up with it), I get only a couple of tries at a buck per year (no luck so far). Someone wrote somewhere that a good squirrel hunter is just plain a good hunter so that's the advice I follow. Not real good at that either but at least I'm outside.

    PC French and Indian 20/.62?

This sounds about right to me - I wasn't considering a Bess because, frankly, they're a bit ungainly to carry all day and I just prefer 20 ga. It didn't occur to me that they were Crown property, but of course that makes perfect sense. As far as rifles, I have a well-made but NOT pc Hawken...

    PC French and Indian 20/.62?

Geez, with such a wealth of info I'm almost more confused! Seriously, I live/hunt in the lower Hudson Valley and want a gun that will represent the hunters of the period in question. I plan to use it for solo trekking, so the only judge of pc is me. However, I do want a fairly accurate...

    PC French and Indian 20/.62?

I'm in the process of saving for a smoothbore - the question is, which type? I'm looking for a gun that would have been used as a game getter in New York area circa 1740. I'm confused about all the different types and configurations and could use a pointer in the right direction.

Favorite Hens in the Woods Recipes

Wow - nice find! I'd do it up in a stew - would go well in gravy w/onions for steak as well I expect. Don't freeze any of it tho - tastes like cardboard after.
