    First chainfire

I had a first chain fire this week on an old Lyman Rem. New army. I only had three loaded and two fired. What a surprise. Sounded like a Hawken. I am glad you and revolver are not injured. My issue was flashover because to small RBs and no lube. I got some lubed wads as soon as possible.

    Flintlock help

Great looking rifle. Does not have the typical European replica look. It has an "Early Virginia" look about it

    RD Woodall rifle

Curt, thanks. Your information is the first I have learned of the gun maker. Seems to be a good lead.

    Lancaster repaired

About the moisture content I cannot say. I know the rifle is 20 or thirty years old and was in an estate sale. It had little use. I have no way of knowing how it was stored. I think it had dried to some brittle stage. The wood grain was poorly selected to run cross the wrist. I am still going to...

    Lancaster repaired

Where I live in west Texas those skills are rare. Mr Hinkle lives in the Dallas are 350 miles east. I could not find another closer. I am sure there are gun makers around most I have seen are east of the Mississippi . I had some gun smiths and hobbiest tell me how to fix it or offer to repair...

    RD Woodall rifle

Most guns of this quality cost a few thousand dollars. ( my opinion) it is worth $700 as that would be the cost of the parts. The value really cannot be measured in dollars. I could never imagined owning such a rifle. Most people who look at one of these contemporary long rifles don't really...

    Lancaster repaired

The time I first saw that break my heart sank. I still feel as if I lost a treasure. It was like having damage to a great painting. No repair can make it whole. However Chuck Hinkle did a master job. He is a master gun maker. He still makes guns but mostly he is retired.

    Lancaster repaired

There was enough shifting that the trigger guard was bent. The whole thing had pulled away. The tang bolt remained tight.

    Lancaster repaired

I don't know. I am being extra careful. I don't know the glue. It was a two part but not epoxy. Apparently very strong. There are no hidden pins ets to make it work.

    Lancaster repaired

It has a long tang bolt that kept it from coming apart. I took it from a closet and struck the stock on the door. It was being stored in a closet near a central heating unit. I think the wood expanded and shrank. I made a poor choice in storage. I. Plan to store it in a neutral closet barrel down.

    RD Woodall rifle

It was an accidental find at a bargain price. It ha Siler lock probably Douglas barrel. The rifle is skillfully made. It is heavy would work for a large shooter. It has a straight barrel of .45 cal. Because if LOP is long I have to use a bench rest. The name on the barrel is RD Woodall.

    Cracked stock

Thanks to all for good suggestions. I will keep you informed.
  19. R

    Cracked stock

The crack runs to the lock mortice. The tang screw which screws into the trigger group holds the stock together and prevented any travel of the crack. I don't think I will remove that unless it seems advisable. Glue and wrap the crack seems to be a good plan, but a dowel from the lower part...

    Cracked stock

MD, I was thinking along the same line but thought of removing triggers guard and trigger before glueing crack. The dowels seem to be a good idea.
