    Lyman GPR Twist Question

Thanks for the input. The gun I am looking to buy is only $150 in good condition. I thought it would be a good gun for my wife to use at our club shoots. I own a GPR 50 cal flintlock and I love it. I am probably going to buy it. It's too good of a price to pass up; a new barrel cost more.

    Lyman GPR Twist Question

I may have the opportunity to purchase a lefty percussion GPR. The only issue is that the barrel is 1 in 32" twist which is designed for conicals. I was thinking about this gun for my wife as a target rifle and conicals are expensive. So my question is, what can I expect if she shoot PRB out...

    Hunting Squirrels with a smoothbore

I am going to definitely try your suggestions. What you said made sense. I don't have much experience with shot but have experienced the hole in the pattern in the limited shooting I have done.

    Hunting Squirrels with a smoothbore

Thanks for the info. I am curious why the use of so many OS cards and no cushion wads. Is there some reason for this? I look forward to trying out the suggestions. I am hoping the weather and my life cooperate with me.

    Early 18th Century Shot Pouch/Snake/Flask

I was wondering if anyone knew what was appropriate for carrying shot in the early eighteenth century. I have seen plenty of flasks which seem to be from the 19th century. I am not sure when snakes were used. I would also like to know when the measured flask spouts were used. These are...

    Moon Phase Whitetail Hunting

Hi all, I just read a review in the lastest issue of Muzzleblasts on a book entitled "Moon Pase Whitetail Hunting". The book is basically about the effect on moon phase on deer movement and behavior. Just wondering what y'alls experience is with the moon's phases effects on hunting. I...

    American vs. English Walnut

I was told by someone that American walnut has the tendency to crack and therefore would only use English walnut for a gun stock. Does anyone have experience/knowledge on the matter that can clear this up? I am considering a NSW Early English Trade Gun which is stocked in American walnut and...

    Advice on a French Fowler

Wow! I am overwhlemed by all the responses I received on the topic. I was leaning toward not buying it and now know for sure to keep looking. I also learned a lot of information regarding French guns. Thanks, John

    Advice on a French Fowler

I am in the market for a fowler, preferably a French one to go along with my interests. I saw this one at TOTW: http://www.trackofthewolf.com/categories/partDetail.aspx?catId=12&subId=81&styleId=284&partNum=AAB-748 I don't much about anything when it comes to selecting a gun that is PC for...

North Star West Early English Fowler

Just wondering if anyone has built it and could tell me approximately how long it took you. I have never built a gun and was wondering if it is worth the $400 savings in building my own. I understand there is a certain level of satisfaction associated with one's work but i don't want to commit...

What Smoothbore would you buy if you had a nice Tax Return

If you have a nice tax refund, that means you have given the government a no interest loan for a year on what you are getting back. While you're at it, I would like such a loan as well. :winking:

    MY first!!!

I concur with the rest of the guys. I wish I had got just a doe when I had my opportunity to shot at one of four of them on Thanksgiving. Needless to say, I rushed the shot and they outwitted me. The good news is, I can still hunt for a few weeks.

    Deer calls

Just wondering does anyone use deer calls? If so, when are they most effective, etc? Also, while the current calls on the market are mostly plastic, is there evidence of deer calls used in the 18th century. I have never used a call. A guy I met hunting said he uses a doe in heat can with a...

    last day of northern zone!!

From past experience, do you think that the late muzzleloading season in the southern part of NY is worth the hunt? I have the opportunity to hunt in Orange County NY in Sterling Forest. I was out there today and with the snow was able to find some nice spots as well as some does. They of...

    Proper Camo for deer huntin?

I too wear a military chem suit. I am not sure how active and effective the charcoal is (the whole scent blok charcoal thing is another issue). I wear them because they were the right price, FREE, and because they are oversized. I can wear long underwear, thin pair of sweat pants, jeans and...

    Half cock or Hammerstall?

Reading the earlier posts on this topic, I guess it comes down to whether I trust the leather or the half cock mechanism.

    Half cock or Hammerstall?

I used a hammerstall for the first time on Saturday. My only problem/question I have is that how do you maintain proper spacing between the flint and frizzen (I was told about the width of a businees card) and have the frzzen sit flush with the pan with the hammerstall on. It seems you can't...

What to make with deer legs

Just wondering what you did to treat or preserve the bone. Do I need to skin and remove all tendons, etc now or can I freeze dry the leg with hoof attached and do it later.
