    CVA Mountain rifle c. 1970s

That is a real douglas barrel. I have often traded two for one for spanish bbl rifles made immediately after. I f your bbl says made in usa, and a few omoitted this logo it is a douglas bbl.

    CVA side by side

I,ve owned several of the 12 doubles made by "Navy" , CVA, etc. Most were cyl bore and shot great. I've killed countless critters with one of these. From rabbits up to deer. Most had good steel but crappy sears/triggers. I shot several deer with a CVA whose bbls crossed, with solid .710 round...

How'd they make round ball molds?

They are said to have made a cherry with each new rifle or upon freshening. The usual medium was soapstone, I believe. I used to own a soapstone bullet made with a cherry.

    Scatch built lock

Sometimes in the 60's we ran out of original locks for our guns and began using commercial productions. None of the components are beyond ones time/patience/skills if you really wish to build a complete handmade lock. I am often asked to build parts for antique locks and make them look...

    Stock bedding matrial??

I often use microbed to help hide poor inletting on customer's guns. Make the color right and stain the stock dark and it is almost un-noticeable.

    Narrow screw slots

If the slot has been "boogered", I peen the top first and then open up the slot. I guess I have over a hundred different screwdriver tips as I do this for a living. The driver should completely fill the slot, all the way to bottom and be snug on the sides. They should always be a little smaller...

    Bill Large Barrel

Shoot, the best I can offer is a 54 with no breechplug that has never been mtd. It IS a genuine large as I got it from him in the 70's. He didn't like letting go go unbreeched bbl's but 75 dollars talked, then...

    Soldering help

Fortunately I was a plumber before I was a gunsmith! The cleanliness of the joint and the quality of the flux and solder outweigh my own incompetence. Heat the biggest part with the torch and only touch the solder to it during hat-up to tell when optimum temp has been reached. Like "baby bears'...

    Bill Large Barrel

I've seen Large bbl's that lacked his name but all, except the very early ones should have Wm. Large and JJJJ. He ven went as far as "naming" the bbl's for special requests. I have one in 444 that was named "Old Grass Creek"(They's been some fellers stamping JJJJ on some dubious bbl's and...

    CVA Hawken

Thet looks lik them hybrids of CVA and Traditions. What matters is whether it'll shoot where ye look. I've owned a lot of CVA's and Navy stuff over the years and some of the early CVA bbl's were Douglas. If you want to know the "twist" merely use a tight patch on a jag and measure how many...

Sorry, I don't remember that thread. Try the search component? I shall watch to see what "these fellows" say, as I'm interested.

    cva mnt rifle 54 cal.

Some of the early CVA Mtn. rifles had Douglas? barrels. If they are not marked made in Spain, etc. Never saw a flintlock but have changed a couple to flint. When in doubt as to "twist" merely use a tight patch and measure how long it takes to turn one full turn. A light pencil mark can index...

    Soldering help

Soldering requires good clean surfaces and the correct temp to flow. Clean well, flux (use french chalk ( the stuff welders use to mark steel) to prevent solder from flowing onto surfaces not to be soldered)and put the torch flame on the largest part, not where you have your solder! Then as you...

    jag and patches stuck

I've been using, for decades, a grease gun and adaptors made for the various flash-holes and nipples that won't use a standard grease fitting. The grease gun method is messy but NEVER harms the barrel. You can always hit the bro-in-law with the grease gun if this fails! (Make him hold the...

    Attaching brass ramrod tip

Careful about using anything except hichory for ramrods! The sometime break and impale ones "paw" leaving a dandy puncture! I cut little places in the tip of the wood where it slides into the tip, also rough up the inside of the tip so it is not so "slick" and use epoxy. Then drill the hole...
