    Failed attempt...

I concur with Bioprof...that's beautiful raw material you have there, and I can see very little that looks seriously wrong with your work. "cept for losing parts. If those are all you've mislaid in fifteen years, you're doing well! I can set something on my workbench, directly in front of me...

    Flax Water Bags

Man, I didn't know those were still around. Brings back some fond memories of my misspent youth! I remember having one on the front of our old green Studebaker when dad would take us for drives in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts while he was stationed in California during the unpleasantness in Korea.

PC Knives vs. Modern Designs & Materials

Gotta watch doing it for fun, Mr. Boom. That's how I got started, and after a while, I had all these knives hanging around the place. That's why you'll find me, from time to time, holding down a table at a knife and gun show.

Alamo Musso Bowie from ML Knives

Nice bit of forgery there, Senor Shank. As a Neo-Tribal Metalsmith, that's the sort of work I favor. Though I sometimes like to make 'em shiny. Here's my rendition of the Musso:

    Crazy Forum Members

What a great horn. You have to be well-armed, venturing into the woods where thos little savages lurk. They'll pounce on a guy and store him away for the winter.

Great shots on the silver screen...

For me, it was when working on the location shoot in New Salem, Illinois for "The Awakening Land". In one scene, all of us extras were whooping and hollering for some reason. The guy next to me was to fire off his flinter into the air. For one take, he let fly too soon, right next to my face and...

What Kind of Wood is This?

That looks like lacewood to me. I've used the stuff and really like it. It carves nicely and takes an incredible polish...the grain looks three-dimensional.

    Pronunciation question

Consider yourselves fortunate that none of the terms we use originate in Poland or Finland.

    handgonne vs breastplate

It wasn't so much the thickness of plate armor that served as protection, but the shape of the plates. They were rounded, curved and angled to deflect projectiles and blades. Think of Medieval stealth technology. This way, the wearer would be protected by a light-weight battle harness...

    handgonne vs breastplate

It's good to see our Russian cousins having some good, clean fun. Can't help but wonder what was in that jug they were passing around.

    Dragoon

Smoking50, I have to hold the sights at the same really LOW spot at 25 yards. My suspicion is that a greater distance, the point of aim will be the same as point of impact. Just have to be a better shot than I am to reach that accuracy. I suppose that calls for lots and lots of practice.

    The tale of a jaeger

Tony, the gentleman who restored that piece is a national treasure. Shake his hand for me!

    Dragoon

[/img] My apologies: took pictures and forgot to post them. Here's my only revolver, with the Slim-Jim holster I made for the piece. Oh yeah, the Remington #10 caps work a treat. Thunderstick Traders seems to stock everything.

    Rough out or Grain Out?

I normally do the smooth side out. That way I can waterproof and wax as well as show off the grain. Makes cleaning easier.

    A Allentown pistol

Tres elegante, mon frere! I especially liked the tube-sighted rifle on your site, as well as the two left-handed pieces.

    Dragoon

Since you fellows have been having such a good time with Walkers and their kin, I decided to wander a couple blocks to Thunderstick Trading here in Tucson and take a look at what they had. There were specimens of just about every Colt cap-n-ball ever made. Felt like a kid in a candy store...

    My Hand Gonne

If need be, you can always bop him on the noggin with the discharged gonne.

    Concerning the smoking of pipes

I smoked pipes for many years. Certainly didn't inhale. The "aromatic" blends like cherry, vanilla, etc., tasted worse than they smelled and would probably have an effect like MACE if sucked into the lungs. My favorites were heavy on the latakia and perique, smelled like burning gym socks and...

    Osage orange ram rods?

Try some of the bowyery or primitive archery websites, there are a few purveyors of osage orange staves out there. Woodcraft and Woodworkers Outlet may have some, if there's one of them in your vicinity. The stuff's brutal to work, but it should make a wonderful ramrod.

    What do we call this?

Pitchy, you have a climate advantage over me. With our balmy Tucson weather, I don't have the excuse that it's to blaed nasty out to do chores. Ergo, SWMBO takes advantage.
