    Sidearm when hunting bear?

It's not enough to make me an expert, just a skeptic. There are all sorts of faked animal photos on the net, just do a search

    Sidearm when hunting bear?

    Ah, the miracle of Photoshop.

    smoothbore vs. fowler?

Gentlemen, this confusion could never happen in France. The Commission Générale de Terminologie et de Néologie would have a distinctly French word for each of these variations. So the problem isn't rifling or lack of it, it's the bastardized language we use.

    Roundball Caliber for Large Hogs

Kodiak, there isn't a short answer to the biological argument about non-native or invasive species. In Florida we have a large number of both and they are real problems. It's one thing to talk about theoretical ideas, but I wonder what your opinion would be if you had thirty hogs in your yard...

    Roundball Caliber for Large Hogs

This happened west of where we hunt. Helos are not necessarily the answer to hog hunting. http://backwoodshome.com/blogs/MassadAyoob/2013/01/27/dont-be-afraid-of-flying/

    Roundball Caliber for Large Hogs

That's when they're out and feeding. If we could do this in daylight, we'd do it.

    Lyman Great Plains kit question

I traded a friend for his .54 GPR and I really like it. It shoots ragged holes at 50 yards. I use .530" RB, .018" patch, 50-60gr FFg for target practice. When hunting I load 100gr FFg. I like the GPR so much that I bought a Lyman .54 pistol kit. When I built it I just centered the sights in...

    Eye safety

Now I have to wear glasses to see the target clearly, but I have always worn safety glasses when shooting any firearm. I also wear them during any work that can put steel chips, filings, rust, stuff thrown by the weed whacker, etc in my eyes.

How do you store your black powder?

In my career as a firefighter I never once worried about black or smokeless powder. Lightweight residential construction is a far greater threat to firefighters than anything stored in a house. I store both types of powder in original containers away from sources of ignition. Beyond that I...

Tips for Hunting Rabbits w/out Dogs?

I was twenty-one years old before I found out there were people who hunted rabbits without dogs. Coming from that background it seems you'd have to be a little...touched...to hunt without a dog. HOWEVER, there were times when we saw a rabbit before the dog or dogs smelled it. That usually only...

    Mistake made with flintlock

Although not recommended, people get away with violating one safety rule at a time, in this case having his hand over the muzzle of a loaded rifle. It's when they violate two at a time (hand/rag near trigger) that things go badly. Sadly there a lot of people in the woods and elsewhere that...

    Setting the PRB

Lube makes more difference than you might think. In one barrel I went from .018" ticking to .016 pre-lubed patches and the accuracy got better with the thinner patch and different lube. Don't take for granted that thick patching is absolutely necessary. I've also found that there may be...

    Whoa, that is slick.

    shootin at 150 yds

I agree that shooting a large group of people increases the odds of hitting one of them, but it's hard for me to imagine a group of officers staying stationary while you get the range on them. My informed guess would be that the distance is exaggerated in most of the long range shot stories.

    H&H barrels

I have no idea if they're still in business, but I found this: Mark de Haas of de Haas Barrels, (RR 3 Box 77 Ridgeway, MO 64481, 1-816-872-6308). Also found this as of 2010: 20049 W State Highway Z Ridgeway, MO 64481-9336 (660) 872-6308.

    Tactical Muzzleloading

Having been on SWAT and shot IPSC, IDPA, and 3-Gun for fun, I'm not seeing the correlation between any of that and what I do with BP firearms other than in a very broad sense. Using cover in a fight? Sure, everybody hides behind something on the two way range. Transition to handgun? I'm sure...

    TC Hawken Discontinued

Glad you got a barrel. I know there are some here who don't think S&W owning TC has anything to do with their warranty, but... I was checking a law enforcement forum and it seems that S&W will not sell certain pistols to LE agencies out of fear of having to support them with warranty service...

    Civil War area Rifles

Winchester claimed the "rifle that won the west". but percussion rifles were built long after repeating cartridge rifles were available. This might help: http://www.texasguntrade.com/texassportingrifles.htm

    T/C Hawken Concept

I believe they made a couple of limited edition Hawkens that had blued furniture like the Renegade. And don't forget the Cougars with stainless. I really like the look of mid-century half stock rifles, so the TC appeals to me, especially with a longer GM barrel.
