What is your favorite wax for your stock?

"Is it all that much better that the Minwax finishing paste you can get at Lowes and Home Depot?" yellowhammer, Just saw your question. Haven't tried Minwax on my guns, just the Renaissance Wax. I suspect any quality finishing wax would do fine since it shouldn't interact with any finish. Jeff

    Different calibers different bags

Don't hunt anymore so just had everything in a shooting box to take to the range but that got very heavy. I keep a small box in the car with targets, stapler, eye and ear protection, etc. Now I use separate heavy canvas bags for flintlocks (all 50 caliber), 50 caliber percussion rifle and...

What is your favorite wax for your stock?

Another one who uses Renaissance Wax. A little goes a long, long way. (I also use it on the tenons of my briar pipes which makes it easy to take the stem off without stressing the wood.) Jeff

    Your Flintlock History

It was 1982 and I was 30 years old. I was shooting my T/C Renegade caplock as often as a busy work schedule allowed. Went to a gun show held in a university gym (imagine that happening today) and there was a representative from the Traditions company which had just started. Went home with a...

    Favorite Fiction?

"I just finished writing a fiction novel set in the Rev. War. Hope to get it off to the publisher soon." Rifleman1776, Please let us know when it comes out. Best of luck with the publishers. Bernard Cornwell is mostly known for his series about England: The Winter King series is about King...

    Favorite Fiction?

Bernard Cornwell has a Civil War Series and a Revolutionary War series. And of course all his other historical fiction like the Sharpe books. Also, Don Wright has a couple of books in the mid-1700s period: "The Woodsman" and "The Captives". I enjoyed both books and wish he had written more of...

    Favorite Fiction?

Wow! This is a vast area of literature. Any of the Allan Eckert series Loyalist Dave mentioned would fit. Louis L'Amour in general, especially the early Sackett stories. The Killer Angels by Shaara. The Patrick O'Brian books and Horatio Hornblower stories. The Stars in Their Courses by Shelby...

What got you interested in flintlocks?

The area where I grew up was established shortly after the Pilgrims got to Plymouth so I grew up with all that history on display, including the firearms. That was the bait. In my twenties my best friend introduced me to shooting. That set the hook. Combining that with interest in early American...

    Shotgun recommendation

I wanted a 20 ga single barrel but was on a budget. The least expensive solution was my percussion T/C Renegade. I had an extra barrel bored out to a 62 caliber smoothie. Fifty bucks for the barrel and a hundred to bore it out. Easy to swap barrels with my drop in fifty caliber. Patched round...

    One smart youngen

Thanks for posting about this video. I love to see young people approach living history in such a hands-on way. The amount of care he takes and research he has done is impressive. I do envy his ability to be comfortable on the ground and, especially, to get up so easily. Jeff

    The Romance of Flintlocks

The allure of the flintlock can't be doubted. We took our niece and her husband, both Army vets and skilled with modern guns, to the range. They fell in love with my traditional muzzleloaders, especially the flintlocks. After the range session we talked for hours about muzzleloader history and...

    Magazines

Aside from Muzzle Blasts and Muzzleloader I can only think of Backwoodsman magazine. It often has an article or two on black powder shooting and accoutrements but it's not dedicated to the hobby or its history. I've read Muzzleloader for years and while I miss the Beth Gilgun and Mark A. Baker...

    Cataract Surgury and Shooting

Glad I found this thread as I'm starting the process next week. It sure is encouraging to read all the happy outcomes. Of course, it will probably take months to stop reaching for the glasses I've worn for over 60 years. LOL! Jeff

Tenngun, Is "Give Your Heart to the Hawks" and his other Mountain Men books considered history or accurate historical fiction?

    Best Flintlock History Book?

Can't speak to the other books but Eric Bye's "Flintlocks: A Practical Guide" is an excellent overview about their development and use. Not just informative but well-written. The Amazon price is high but the NMLRA site has it for 30 bucks. Worth it in my opinion. If an updated edition comes out...

    "New" Ruger Old Army

Congrats on the ROA. Love them for reliability and accuracy. FWIW, I get best accuracy with about 25 grains of 3F Goex, a Gatofeo lubed wad, and a .457 ball but never tried conicals. I do have some Olde Eynsford and should try using it the next range session. No matter the charge or projectile...

    Muzzleloader music??

Glad you brought up Korsky and Hawken Horse. I hadn't heard of them but that's some great music. You can hear echoes of the old ballads of England and Scotland in the simple presentation and story-telling lyrics. (Think 'Three Ravens' by Peter, Paul and Mary.) It's easy to imagine listening to...

    Early French Trading Posts, etc.

Thanks for the heads up about the book. Just ordered a copy. Part of the interest is from family history since my first ancestors on the continent came to Quebec in the 1630s. Part because I always found the old North West areas interesting. Jeff

Grease or Oil on the Arbor

I use white lithium grease on the arbors and nipple threads. No matter how long a range session is, the cylinder rotates with no problem. When I clean at the end of the day I just wipe off the arbor and replace the grease. The nipples always come out easily, get cleaned (which I do every time)...
