    Brass triggerguard time

I have always used small sanding belt sticks. I also use them with spit or a light honing oil (spit is easier but the oil works better....just don't do what I did not long ago and start off using oil and then forget and stick the end of the sanding stick back in your mouth.... :p  I use...

    Swivel guns

I just saw that the pictures from my 2009 post are not visable...part of the old dust up with the PhotoBucket clowns. Anyway, here is a repeat.... I realized, about two weeks ago, that my two nephews up in Washington State don't own a cannon! (By the time I was their ages, I had several.) So I...

Reaming and rifling a wrought iron barrel.

IanH I have seen a guy overseas rifling a barrel in a rig like this with a twisted piece of flat stock running back and forth through a slot. He could change the twist easily by making a new strip of stock and twisting to a different pitch. I thought it was pretty clever....

    Artillery "priming" tubes youtube.

I can make one additional recommendation if you use a linstock to fire the cannon.....Mix a little modern smokeless powder with the black powder glued to the circular flange at the top of the priming tube. It will ignite MUCH more easily from the smoldering end of the linstock cord.

    Full scale cannon re-build

As I mentioned early in this thread, Jim Olsen at South Bend Replicas (SBR) was re-boring and installing a steel liner in the barrel I bought from "Barney's Cannons" (the precursor of SBR) in 1969. Although done some months ago, Jim just got around to sending me some pictures of the barrel in...

    Full scale cannon re-build

Well....it's May now and I am still busier than a one legged man in an a$$ kicking contest. But to take a mental holiday, I spent a few afternoons back working on the cannon rebuild. I started by disassembling the cheeks from the trail. Each cheek is 3 inches thick and about 34 inches long...

A peripheral part of a Kibler Woodsrunner

Kansas, I thought about that, but since the lid dovetail is tapered over its full length, I would have had to relieve the wood along the entire length as well as cutting the stop at the end shorter. It certainly can be done that way, but the box lid fit so well I thought it would be easier to...

A peripheral part of a Kibler Woodsrunner

Glad to see the posts about the Colonial.....After thinking about this for a while, I realized that I had put a brass shoe on the wood patch box lid on the Kibler Colonial I did a couple of years ago and I didn't remember having to bend / curve the brass plate to make it fit the wood. So I...

A peripheral part of a Kibler Woodsrunner

OK....having enjoyed assembling and decorating one of Jim's outstanding Colonial rifles back in late 2019, (Kibler Colonial Kit Assembled), I ordered a Woodsrunner last October. It showed up a couple of weeks ago, and since I am up to my neck in work and other projects that I have left hanging...

Finally a Flintlock flush kit that really works

Ok.....since Hatchet Jack posted his note on the magnetic flush tube, I have had to make and send out more than 25 of them !!! To those of you who bought them, do me a favor for a while and, if you like it, keep it to yourself. If you don't like it, post something here ......;).....I need a rest !

    Filling Pin Holes

Silver solder is easy and would do a great job for you. If you don't want to go to that high a temp, put in a piece of whatever size steel pin material you are using (left a little long) and soft solder it in place. Once soldered, cut off the excess pin material and file it smooth. Re-drill...

    Kibler Colonial Kit Assembled

Thank you all for the very kind words. There are many others much more talented than I am in this field and I have learned a tremendous amount from watching the work of others on this forum and on the ALR forum as well. One of the best things about this group is their generosity in sharing...

    Kibler Colonial Kit Assembled

PathfinderNC - Thanks again for the kind words. As for your question about a toe plate, I really never even thought about it while I was putting the kit together. I did think about adding a thumb piece, but because of the length of the tang carving, there was not much room between the end of...

    Full scale cannon re-build

Still operating in slow motion due to work, but I did get the rammer / sponges and the worm completed. Because the shafts are ash, they didn’t take conventional stain very well. So I used iron nitrate and a heat gun to get the base color then toned it a bit with some oil based stain. Once that...
