    Barrel Light

Did similar with a replacement bulb for a mini-maglite, left off the rod, just used slightly stiff 2-conductor wire, and an old mini-mag to hold the batteries and act as switch. Worked so well, someone "borrowed" it and I need to make another. The bulb also fits into the drum just far enough to...

    Pyrodex or BP in sidelock

Used to do the same thing with my CVA Plainshunter. All I ever used was pyrodex, cause it's what I was taught about, and what I was able to get. Finally found a place that had Goex instock, and got a can of 2f to use in a different gun- a flinter. One particular bad day, had enough of pulling...

Why do you use real BP?

I've only been shooting MLs for 4 years, and only ever used Pyrodex. That's what I learned with, that's what I was taught about, and it's easily available and not overly expensive if I watch for the sales. Tried some Goex last summer. What a difference. Easier cleanup, faster more reliable...

    Blank load

I use 75gr pyrodex with an overshot wad to hold the powder in place. Tamp it down gently but firmly. As others have said, keep muzzle up, and because of the wadding you MUST watch direction just in case. Have not had a wad burn or smolder. Plenty loud boom, lots of smoke and flash.

    Rost Chicken.

HEY! YAH you the stinky dog guy... you been snooping around my kitchen? I do similar chicken but with par-boiled taters, sliced into long quarters. Cook it low and slow, in a foil tent, take off the tent just long enough to get a good crispy finish on the skin. Works just as good...

Wahts a way of making leather ALOT softer?

First off, saddle soap is a cleaner, not a softener. All you're doing is making a very clean stiff bag. The only thing softening it is the working of the leather when you apply and rub out the soap (see 2 below). There might be a stiffener between the canvas and leather. If there's a...

    Hints on First Knife Sheath

The welt is in the site Grey Wolf posted, but basically it's a spacer that runs along the seams to protect the stitching from being sliced open whenever you use the knife. Check all 3 of his tutorials- excellent stuff for beginners and a nice reminder for others. You don't NEED a stitching...

    Lets talk about "Pie"

Assuming we're not talking about things baked with a crust (besides the one drinking it)... It's probably not PC, but a friend makes a Fig Pie that's a truely wicked delight. Dried figs boiled in fresh apple cider, I believe he added some cinnamon and nutmeg, and a pint of everclear for each...

    My powder measures...

Very nice. I like the design and the flared lip, and rosewood is very always a pretty wood to work. How does the tung oil react to the powder, if at all? I usually use a hard beeswax finish, applied at high speed and buffed out. Inspirational :thanks: - now I'll have to get down to the shop...

    Pasties, the perfect food!

One of my favorite lunch meals. Haven't made them in years, tho. I'll have to rectify that this week :) Here's a link to the history and recipes... -->Yummy food here!<-- According to the site, they go back to Cornwall, 13 or 14th century and became more popular with copper and tin miners...

    Range rules

Bears repeating. Other safety: Eye and ear protection? Some people just won't wear them, what are your club's other ranges rules about eye & ear gear? Big rule at my range: ONE caliber per station ONLY!!! Got a .50 and a .45? use two stations. Saves on misloads and errors. What about...

    Bobcat for 59$

You might have a long wait for it to die. I've been using a couple of them at Scout Camp for the last 4 years. We shoot the heck out of them for 6 or 7 weeks, then it sits the rest of the year in an unheated barn. As long as they get routine cleaning and maintenance, should last as long as...

Minor prob with my GPR kit stock

I make my own scrapers from flea-market handsaws. Cheap and easy to do, but if you're in the market to buy pre-made tools then Lee Valley tools is one of the best I've found for quality and service. No, I don't work for them (wish I did) but have been more than satisfied with the tools I've...

    Protective oils, etc...

I have 6 of the camp's ML's in storage in a non-heated barn during the winter in Northwoods Wi. Haven't had anything worse than a barrel full of ladybug bodies with a good detailed cleaning including pulling the lock. Everything gets scrubbed, the lock gets a coat of grease and reinstalled...

Load, fire - reload fire sequence for percussion.

This is great, Hope you don't mind if I borrow it for a range poster? Since I get interrupted almost everytime I load, especially when at camp teaching, I have a few barrel plugs I use as indicators. I have a light colored long plug that indicates the gun has powder but no ball, and a short...

Taking care of the inevitable "wounds"

Since almost all of my shooting is done at camp, I have a large first aid kit with various wipes, astringents, bandages, etc. In the 4 years of running the program there, I opened it once. An adult volunteer got a paper cut opening a box of pyrodex pellets (serves him tight), and since he had...

    powder horn sling

If you want it a little more complicated, use the clove hitch and then tie the free ends with an overhand knot. It looks like a square knot when finished, but holds much better.

    Delayed firing

Had the same problem with my CVA Plainshunter kitgun. As you stated, fouling in the breechplug cused MY problem. Needed to be cleaned every 5 or 6 shots, and there wasn't a nipple pick with a flexible enough wire to do it withoug removing the drum cleanout screw. I got a couple of musket...

    Youth Hunter Education Challenge

I've had the opposite experience. I run Shooting Sports for a Scout Camp, and with very few exceptions EVERYONE wants to try the ML at least once, some keep coming back for more. Haven't had anyone willing to try the Rifle Merit Badge with the ML yet, but I'm still hoping. Had one young lady who...
