    Lock inletting

With a round-faced lock, how deep should the mortise be cut? Does the lock get sunk only to the depth of the straight edge, leaving a lot of material proud of the stock? There is only about 1/16" of vertical edge on the lock I have on hand, should I file it back somewhat? FWIW, the lock is an...

    The Early Period Grenade

FWIW, archaeological digs at the site of the Siege of Little Butte des Morts (near Oshkosh, WI, circa 1730) have recovered numerous fragments of iron grenades used by the French.

    Flintlock evolution

OK, I've got a general question about the rock bashers. How do late (1820s-1840s) pattern flint locks compare to the earlier patterns. Specifically thinking about M1835 Springfield patterns compared to, say, a Queen Anne or a Durrs Egg. Not so much aesthetics, but did the final models...

    Excellent explanation, thank you.

    I have a usless question.

Yeah, I suppose putting sights on would be easier. But I expect any 'smithy capable of finagling a functioning lock out of raw iron or whittling a triggergurard out of raw cast brass probably could figure out a way to cut accurate dovetails. I'll chalk it up to style.

    I have a usless question.

Why octagon barrels? For the life of me, I can't see how they would have a lot of benefit compared to round barrels. If you are making a barrel out of iron forged around a mandrel, a round fuller will shape things just as closely as a octagonal one. Draw-filing or grinding to a finish may...

Yeah, that's poking at my mind's eye right there. Nifty. Need a scabbard on the scooter now.

    Lock Opinions

Well, a Chambers lock it is. After consideration, I'm thinking a Round Faced English lock will fit the bill. Wandering around on TOTW, mostly for the color glossy photographs, and found this example of what I was almost thinking Early American Fowler but maybe not so much with the knob at...

    Lock Opinions

Hello - I am considering building a 20ga. smoothbore flintlock, and would like a little guidance on choosing a lock. I am not working on anything period specific, beyond perhaps "1800's Knockabout," ya know, a collection of old parts from broken, worn-out or discarded bits ("hmmm, I s'pose...

    Boat Gun, Redux

Sorry for the snappy reply; I take pride in my stupidity. To clarify, the barrel was proofed alone, not in the stock. I lashed it (deceptively) to the rear bumper of a '79 F-150 (sans truck) that resides on the far side of a sizeable bank. The bumper can slide backwards and usually absorbs...

    Boat Gun, Redux

My product. No manufacturers. That's why I was PROOFING the thing. I dunno, I think that proofing a barrel with a triple charge makes very good sense. Pray, what sort of charge would you proof with? 110%? Gee, lets see how well that holds if you twitch with the old powder measure...

    Boat Gun, Redux

By my estimates, a 35mm cannister should hold about 800gr of shot. Give or take.

    Boat Gun, Redux

Well, I proof tested the boat gun over the weekend. The barrel took a triple charge of 1f (about 400gr, give or take) and two 35mm film cannisters of #3 buckshot in stride. No signs of excessive pressure, no damage at all... Well, the tang got bent back around the breechplug from when the...

First Post - Boat Gun project

Thanks for the feedback. I am envisioning this thing as filling the blunderbuss gap in our household, so if I shoot it at all, it will be with shot, I figure 2 1/2 oz or so. Lofting balls may be fun, but there ain't much room for such shenanigans around here. The plan is to have a...

First Post - Boat Gun project

Hello! Just discovered this forum, and thought I'd show off my current project, a boat gun. I found images of similar infernal devices here www.nmm.ac.uk/collections/search/listResults.cfm?category=firearms&name=Boat% and am proceeding at a glacial pace. The weapon has a 1" bore...
