    Pure lead necessary?

Not posted toward anyone in particular, but maybe one of you fellows could explain. Why would the dia. be different, does an alloy swell and force the mold apart? I would think that if pure lead is poured into a mold and then alloy poured into the same mold they would occupy the same space and...

    Sharps scabbard

Now that's a sweetheart, "the new owner was pleased", I should hope so!!! I have a 74 sporting rifle that would feel right at home snuggled inside that sleeve.HHHMMMMM I have two deer hides that match that color, looks like another project in the wings. Although mine doesn't sport a telescopic...

    top shot

Remember boys, it's entertainment not a history class. The history channel is probably the only venue the producers could find to air the show. It's ironic that it is called Top Shot but not knowing how to play poker decided who was eliminated on the last episode.

    Gun porn alert

Right on  ,TG, Lenk's book is one of the best books I have picked up. Although a high percentage of the arms pictured were built for the higher class of society, it is still a wealth of knowledge. And it is a great reference for period engraving if one is inclined to try their hand in...

    Question Regarding Horn/Bag

Carl , in the past some members have been hard on you, I myself included. In this case I feel it was un-warranted. Your post was most helpful.I think a FAQ would be a helpful addition to the forum, for that matter, it may exist and I've never noticed it.Sometimes the search works for me...

    Salt and Pepper Horn

Very tastefully done. Like the scrim. How did you flatten the horn, hot oil, water?

Which rifle do you wish you had kept?

I traded a Day swivel breech I built from one of his kits. A .50 cal, one bar. smooth, one bar. rifled. Traded it on a IH kit. Now I got a really nice .50 cal deer rifle and don't regret that but I would love to have that swivel breech back. Kinda like a double edged sword, OHHHH to be young...

    Finished finally, winter projects

Woodbutcher, the handle is an old African trade bead, commonly called "elbows". This bead was made in the type called milleflore ( thousand flower). The overall length is 6" with the bead being just under 3". The white between blade and handle is a piece of antler, used to cushion the glass bead...

    Finished finally, winter projects

Rick, that horn had such nice color that I didn't want to do anything else to it but shape it. So I put seven panels from butt to tip. The hole is small so I threaded the finial, so you can fill it from the butt end. The horn is old and had a small worm hole in it. I used a small piece of...

    Finished finally, winter projects

Wheeewww, 45" of snow in three days has not happened to us for a few yrs. I know some of you fellows get a lot more than that. I live out in the country, alot of trees, the roads didn't get plowed for a few days. I thought , what the heck, the drive way can wait. So put another log in the stove...

    Stuffins for my bags

Pc.knife, thanks for the compliment. Onion skins will give a light yellow to brown color, depending on the strength of the solution and amount of time the object is allowed to soak. When I color antler I use Feiberlig leather dye. I leave the surface a little rough and apply 1 or 2 coats as...

    Junior Hawk

What a great post. Good looking hawk, great pictures, and I've learned what the translation for handle and sheath are in Polish. Outstanding craftsmanship

    New sheath

Thanks Cliff for the  ,I think beading is like scrimming or carving, it takes repetition. Thats what makes it look good. The same tension on the thread, same # of beads(if using lazy stitch) ect. The one thing that makes it easier is good eyes, those holes in the beads and the eye of...

Here's a pic of the base, I lost it some where in transit. See, I told you it was a mixture of characteristics, time periods. I tried to tie them together, but it still shows.

    Stuffins for my bags

Here's a couple of shot and powder measures, some pan brushes, vent picks, and a flint wallet that go with my bags. The pan brush and pick are antler turned on a lathe as are the spouts on the shot bags. The powder measures are white tail tines. Thanks for taking a look.
