    Partner Shoot!

Hey guys, I aint been around in a year or better, been down with some severe shoulder problems & a few other real life things getting in the way. Havnt popped a cap in that long either. Its good to see some familiar names though, but i see a few missing too. Anyway, still not 100%...

    Twist rate question

I shoot the same rifle as one of mine, and no complaints about the 1:48 and RB's. I will offer this caveat though, in mine at least midrange loads of 60 to 70 grains of FF seem to give the best accuracy and mine does like a tight ball/patch combination.

    blank load detonation

I'd add to this, my question being, that barring a bore obstruction of some kind pressure would vent out the end of the barrel wouldnt it? and if fouling were so bad to create a bore obstruction, wouldnt that prevent powder from reaching the ignition area of the bore the same way as a plugged...

    Electrolytic Rust Removal: Barrel Connection?

I have found, that over time the electrolytic action will eat away copper clamps (dont ask :rotf: )and what ive found works best is, depending on the application, clamp, or bolt another piece of iron to the part i'm trying to derust, that will keep my charger clamps out of the solution. Then of...

Battery Charger for Electrolytic Rust Removal

right, just a plain jane 12v automotive charger, though the small ones 10 amps and less take longer. I have a 200 amp shop charger that ive used at 40 amp setting and it'll clean up a hunk of iron in 3 or 4 hours. if you cant find the washing soda in the laundry soap area, check with the...

    Couple of questions....

I too shoot a .50 Cabella's Hawken, with the 1:48 twist. As i understand it, they are built by investarms, the same company that manufactures the lymans, & for the price its been a reliable and fun rifle to shoot. I will note though, initially i did have to shim the (adjustable) rear sight a...

    Nipple "really" frozen!

Ive used EER for rust removal for lots of things through the years, and found at least an 8 or 10 amp charger is the minimum. I use my 200 amp charger set to 40 amps with good results. A lot of good info can be found on this procedure, just google "Electrolytic Rust Removal" and per some...

    Wood too dry

DONT use glue/sawdust in any area that will be visible, The repair area will accept finish in an entirely different way than wood and will never blend in with existing finish (or refinish) well. Your best bet would be to machine out the area in question and glue in a small matching repair...

    Cyl. bore pattern density?

It would be interesting to see how it patterna at 40 yards. sounds like your patterns almost reach improved cyl. bore or perhaps a loose modified.

    ball size for my .50

a good place to start would be to measure your bore, land to land measurement. a tighter bore of course will need a smaller diameter ball. My .50 measures .504 land to land and shoots best with a .495 ball wrapped in an .018 patch. That means i'm compressing an .018 patch into .009 between the...

Removing Rust With Electrolysis Great For Guns!

I've used Electrolytic Rust Removal (e.r.r.) for several years on various small parts when needed. Never have tried gun parts though but theres no reason it shouldnt work. It does take some scrubbing to get the black residue off a hunk of metal after the process & be sure to use a rust...

    r/b mold size?

Lead hardness will cause some variation in actual size of cast balls, but using soft lead, you should be ok with a mold of the specific diameter that shoots well. I shoot .495 in my 50 cal, & both my molds are for casting that size. when i put the calipers on balls ive cast, rotating the ball...

    magnum caps????

For me Remingtons give the best consistancy and most accurate groups, Standard CCI's shoot almost as well as the remingtons but i get an occasional misfire. CCI magnums, and RWS both open up my groups considerably with about 10% misfires. In all fairness to the RWS though i think they're a bit...

    Old Black Powder

Actually, any time you combine a combination of chemicals by any method, you have a compound, and to properly manufacture black powder requires more than just mixing the ingredients together dry. In the very early days of black powder, when it was common to just mix the 3 components, frequent...

How do you crown a cut down barrel?

An old DIY gun repair book i have, recommends the same method for crowning except suggests a brass carriage bolt. another thing suggested in this book, is drill a hole through a wood block, 3 inch or so thickness, of the appropriate diameter to clamp snugly around the barrel, cut it in half, and...
