    Wooden under rib

Colorado Clyde, a article in Muzzle Blasts December 1988, A Rifle of Distinction by Robert Bourdon begins. Sometimes called a "New England Kentucky," this rifle has all the attributes of the Kentucky, plus a little more. One variation is found in the rear sight, which is made so that it can be...

    Barrel length

What is the advantage of a 42" or 44" smooth bore barrel of any cal. over a shorter 30" barrel when shooting a round ball with only a front sight.

    Roundball Caliber

Thanks to everyone for your response. I was thinking of building something that a 74 + old man could enjoy shooting paper without wasting powder and lead. Would a 45 cal. to 54 cal. hold a 6" pattern at around 50 yds. Also with the smoothbore would accuracy be better with more or less powder to...

    54 cal. smoothbore

How do they do at 50 yds. with a round ball load? I have a 62 trade gun and a 58 smooth rifle, neither have a rear sight. I enjoy shooting both, but the 62 is very light, about 6 lbs. with a 36" barrel. After 25 or 30 shots the recoil gets a little rough for a 69 year old boy at heart. The 58...

    .36 cal straight barrel

I have two 36 caliber rifles. One has a 13/16" X 42" barrel and the other has a 7/8" X 42" barrel. I like the 7/8" X 42" barrel the best. It has a better feel to it and also makes a nice looking gun by giving a little more width in the lock and wrist of the gun. I thank if you take a 7/8" barrel...

    Poll: More reliable ignition type

Swampy I agree with you in that it is hard to tell if you have a good flintlock. The caplock in my experance has been sure fire if you don't let the fouling build up in the drum. On the other hand the flintlock { if a good one } will fire if you keep the frizzen clean and a sharp flint. I shoot...

    black powder can spout

I drilled a hole in a old powder can cap then soldered a piece of 3/8" OD tubing. Then you can make a wooden plug for it. Safe to use on the range because you don't have a open can of powder.
