    Hand Mortars

Since my earlier post I now own one of these it comes in handy at my Jaeger events. Mine worked fine right out of the box. With a tennis ball 3/4 filled with sand it will throw this grenade 240 yards. But with the weighted ball the projectile moves too fast to be seen by the public. I now use...

If we don't have the Widowmaker big honking flint musket on the same day I may make this.

    Gun case

I bought two cheap long rectangular plastic gun cases. I cut the end off one case then I cut the extension off the other case. I used pop rivets with back up washers to join the two halves. You have to add some overlap. This came out a round 60 bucks for me. The first one I made works so...

    Group in the Charlotte area

I live north of Charlotte and there is no such animal in the area. The French Broad Longrifles are west of Asheville and the Lafayette Longrifles are near Fuqua Verena. Both of these clubs hold monthly shoots and rendezvous. In October The Southeastern National rendezvous is held near...

    'Bout time!

Jethro, I have to warm mine up before Friendship I should be able to get a couple of these in. 75 yards could be tricky as my clubs backstops are 25, 50 and 100 yards. I will have to devise a free standing target frame for the 75 yard.

    another hand gonne question

This ring is not around the barrel it is attached to the side of the wood at the barrel.I have seen pictures of other early gonnes with this ring. I just wonder why.

    another hand gonne question

Why was a big ring on some models of Hand Gonnes? It is such a simple device I can't figure out the ring!

    Handgonne timeline

It is one of the big long German matchlocks Dixie Gun Works used to sell 20 years ago. I do plan to take pictures of my display for you guys. I am notorious for NOT taking pictures at events but I will try this time. My camera normally resides in my wesket pocket collecting dust!

    Handgonne timeline

Thank you all, I have a time frame now. I picked up one a couple weeks ago it is a simple one just a stick with a barrel on it and a touch hole on top. I set up a weapons display at the Loch Norman Highland Games in three weeks. With the new addition I can set it up with my matchlock, wheel...

    Skirmish Powder

The only local place around me who sells black powder only sells one brand of powder each year. This year they have Skirmish Powder. Has any body used this powder for shooting lead balls? It is all I can get local now.

    Who is "J. Caldwell N.C."?

J Caldwell is a good friend of mine who lives in NC. He makes rifle and smoothbores with a realistic antique finish. James makes these muzzle loaders up when he feel like it and sells them at local gun shows. I have a couple with this signature on it. James does not have E Mail or the internet...

This is a great looking musket! I like a three band musket.

Help with the mirror shooting trick please?

It is fairly easy to do with a flintlock as the rifle will be pointed downrange behind you it will be resting on your left shoulder ( for right handed shooters ) The flash from the pan is further away from your face than when you shoot it normally. Line up your sight picture the same way in the...

    big bore fans?

I like my 62s, I have several of them, I have never had a deer take a step after taking a 62 through the boiler room. I use 75 grains of 3f. all of mine have short barrels except one. all of them are sort of heavy so the recoil is not that bad. The only problem I have when pouring ball I go...

    Shooting a Charley

Paper cartridges are inaccurate because an undersized ball is used. The smaller ball was used to counter black powder fouling. 70 percent of a black powder load stays behind as gunk. When you shoot these muskets with a proper patch and ball load they are fairly accurate.

    Whos Uses 3f in a .62 rifle?

With 110 grains in a Jaeger barrel you are blowing 30 grains out the muzzle. Put a white sheet on the ground in front of your muzzle if you doubt this.
