    100 yd Shooting

I find there are so many variables in POA, equal spacing on the left and right of the post, front post position in rear notch, etc... I have opened my rear notch to let more light through on the left and right of the front sight. I had trouble before this in judging windage on any given shot. I...

    Just finished.

Very nice clean build. I hope it gives many years of pleasure and service to you!

    wood working vise

I too like the pattern makers vise. I line the jaws with heavy belt type leather; I just crazy glue it to the wood jaw inserts and trim to flat with an exact-o knife. I have one set in the corner of my L shaped bench, then another to the right leg and a 5" mechanics vise on the front corner of...

    Inlaying leaves

I have done various silver inlays, patch boxes, etc. I am pondering the idea of merging silver engraved inlays along with carved acanthus leaves in the entry thimble location (kind of a wrap of the leaf), the back part of the wrist from the back stock area and the tang area and perhaps a bit in...

    Sharping gouges

To start I like Pfiel chisels and gouges which come out of the box quite nice, however others need a bit more. I was a one point a bit hesitant to "go after" expensive tools to get the finish I wanted for them. I guess once a tightwad always a tightwad...anyway. I begin by carefully checking...

    Sharping gouges

I take a piece of hardwood and cut a groove with the gouge I want to sharpen. I use Flex-cut gold (from Woodcraft)as my honing compound and pull the gouge through the cutout several times with a bit of downward pressure on it. A few strokes will do the trick. I am believing your gouges have been...

    1 inch bore pivot gun

I have a 38" long 1.5" bore 1860 1/2 scale smooth bore that I load with 1 oz Fg, a bit of newspaper and then about 6 ozs of fine cornmeal. I have shot up to 3 oz BP, but it gets a bit too loud, even with ear muffs.

    Why is it?

Sounds to me like real world practice for hunting season! :rotf:

How hair should a hair be?

I totally missed the "set" part. (I was speeding through a large group of posts obviously too fast!) I tend to get a little jumpy about safety and shooting real quick, too!

How hair should a hair be?

I get wary when lightness of triggers comes up as a topic as I fear people may work to lighten the trigger to minimum and not take time to adequately check to absolutely certain that the cock will not prematurely discharge in its new lightened state. I like to adjust a trigger with the arm in...

    patch material for loading

I also take my mic to the fabric store and buy a couple of yards of denim that is the thickness I want. I would not want to try double thick anything. I do not like used material either (like worn jeans, etc.) the thickness varies too much for best accuracy; might tear out too. When choosing...

    J. G. Righter rifle

I have rifle, percussion now, that has the above signature on the barrel. It also reads ?os Golcher on the lock plate. Appears to be about a .32 caliber with about a 40" barrel. The muzzle has a design of small circles in forming a circle around the breech. Brass trigger guard and a narrow brass...

    draw filing

Check out Brownells for a decent 10" file. Call the tech dept and tell them what your looking for. I have had several ...they run about $10 and work great. I clean my file with a wood handled slag brass brush from welding supply. Works great.

    Neutralizing LMF solution

Soda ash like from a Culligan water treatment store will work far better than baking soda if you can get it.

    A decorated 17th century gun

Wonderfully executed. I very much enjoyed seeing your efforts. Every turn and new pic has something more delightful than the past one. Enjoy hunting with her. :)

    Patch Thickness?

J is on track... Fly.. If you do not have a variety of patches available you can put a cigarette paper between the ball and patch. Sometimes a bit tighter makes a big difference. Then write the thickness down and head out to a fabric store with your mic in hand to find the material with a...

    Renegade 54 load?

In a .530 ball lead that is 97% compared to 99% makes about a grain weight difference. I bought some of the Rotometal stuff and had a few pounds of lab grade 99%. That is the source of the %'s. I thought it was interesting, but not enough to pay lab grade px's!
