Dumped the rest of the Old Bones bottle into the solution, put horn in, and forgot it for about 5 hours..horn came out...

ever hear of a markwell gun?

A newbie at my club showed up with a hard used pawn shop gun marked only "Markwell"...he's curious as to the maker...it is a .50 cal. and I would guess at Euroarms as the mfr, but my knowledge in this area is between weak and none...anyone hear of the name? The newbie speculates it might be...

    Unconquered

As I was falling asleep last night, this movie popped into my head: does anyone remember it? It was made far enough back for Paulette Goddard to be the hot female, and Gary Cooper the guy...dealt with the siege of Ft. Pitt...some wildly improbable scenes, but all in all, fun to watch. It also...

    unhappy with CO2 unloader

My old CO2 unloader has been giving me trouble, so I sent to DGW and got "Innovations Saf-T" unloader. It just arrived, and I see that it takes a slightly longer CO2 cartridge than my prior one, which would work with Daisy cartridges easily available at Wallyworld...I'm going to go online and...

    frozen nipple

last week I picked up a .54 T/C renegade from a pawn shop. ($200). In really good shape, a little surface rust in bbl, cleaned up good. The nipple and the clean out screw appear to be "frozen" in place...I sure can't move the nipple with a nipple wrench, nor the clean out screw with a screw...

I need to buy a part

my Lyman and my T/C's both use a small sear spring. To reduce trigger pull, I cut a coil of this spring. Trying to do this on Sunday, I managed to lose the spring. I had a couple on hand, bought against this problem some time ago. my current problem is that I cannot find a way, on either the...

The extreme gas shortage in western NC, upstate Sc, eastern Tn, and SW Va has forced the French Broad Rifles Inc to cancel the planned Primitive Weekend and Woodswalk we'd scheduled for September 26-28. We hope to offer a woodswalk sometime soon...Hank...Sec/Treasurer

    ball drop

does anyone have a table showing the drop of a .49 ball at various distances? If this question needs the powder charge stated, then it would be 40gr at 25 yds, 60 gr at 50 yds, 60 gr at 100 yds...I've finally got my daughter's rifle sighted in at 25 yds, and I'd rather she used powder to adjust...

caution cost me a day's shooting

Friday night, I loaded the vehicle with the stuff for a day at the range. Saturday morning, we had torrential rains, and a couple of Tee storms. I thought, "OK, only a fool would stand in the middle of a pasture holding a steel tube..." so I unpacked the vehicle, and went about the day...about...

digging around in my parts box, I found a set trigger for a CVA Mtn rifle...missing the little wire spring that drives the "shooting" i.e. front, trigger...I've just spent a frustrating couple of hours trying to make one...anyone know of a source for CVA parts? Thanks, Hank

    Pawn shop prowling

got cabin fever and went on the prowl yesterday. One shop that had had 4 guns in June had none now. Another had three, including a CVA bearcat with a plastic stock ($59.95) and a Traditions Hawken ($197.50)...I offered the guy $150 for both, and he took it. I figure to try re-stocking the...

    source for beeswax

talking with a gal in my wife's garden club, I learned she and her husband are dedicated bee keepers..she was telling me of rescuing a wild hive and having a bear destroy it....I asked her for any wax she might have, and yesterday got a nice batch of raw wax...I'm now going to render it in a...

    testing an old myth

yesterday at the range, in a lull in activity, a couple of us were talking about how the old timers supposedly would pour powder into their hands and then into the bbl if loading in a hurry. I remembered something about them putting a ball in the palm and pouring enough to cover it. Proving...

    Jeff Tanner mould

when I posted a question about ball size for my .50 T/C, someone suggested a .48 ball, which works and loads well. When I wondered where I'd find a .48 mould, someone else suggested Jeff Tanner's site. The mould arrived yesterday...a beautiful piece of machined brass...Jeff engraved the .48...

    ball size for my .50

I have 4 .50 caliber guns, two flint, two caplock. I find that only a .010 patch allows me to load without using a mallet...as I read all of the posts about patches here, it seems that I am at odds with just about everyone...while my recovered patches are not torn or burned, I would like to try...
