    grizzly hide usefull?

Why don't you try tanning it yourself? You could take the rubbed spots and tan them fur off and the rest tanned fur on. It sounds like you don't have a lot to loose if things don't go right, and you'll learn how to tan hides. If you do tan it, let me know. I need a piece of fur on about 2"x3".

    Gloss or satin ?

I'm trying to make up my mind here. So far I have this great looking railroad spike hawk head and a fancy curly Maple handle that I have stained with Minwax Wood Preserver in the Golden Oak color. I married the handle to the head with epoxy, but it will be completely covered by the hafting. I...

    Priming Powder

Yeah, well "back in the day" they used a lot of mortar and pestel reduction of powder to make priming powder too. I have even heard of (no authentic period documentation so far) some that used pepper mills to do this, but most them were named "Lefty" after blowing/burning a hand off with this...

Can This Dutch Oven Be Saved?

No, it cannot be saved. Send it to me along with $20.00 for an EPA approved disposal. All kidding aside this one is in fair condition and should clean up really pretty easily. Just get the crud out of it. Sandapper it sandblast it soak it, what ever and then coat it with oil and season as...

    Minnesota Rookie

Welcome to the campfire. Yep, it sounds like you need to talk things over on the muzzle loader accuracy forum. You'll get all kinds of advice. Most of it contradictory and all of it correct, but then again that's half of the fun of this sport. Figurong out what is the best load for your...

Retrofitting The Great Spaghetti Plains Rifle

I have the Cabellas marked version of your rifle and it shoots great! It looks like a piece of junk, but the end results are outstanding. I got it from the classifieds on this forum and when I first saw it my heart just fell through my......well it dropped a lot. AIt's a [poorly done kit gun...

    Favorite Equipment?

I've got three younger brothers that I take with me to do all the guttin' and packin'. They haven't realized yet that they are working for about ifteen pounds of venison sausage each for a weeks hard labor. I also send my older sister a few pounds to keep her quiet on the subject (she's a bit...

    HISTORY CHANNEL Mountain Men

Kit Carson was never a trapper. He traveled through the mountains, but never made his living as a trapper according to the documentary. The documentary was about the fur trade and the men who worked it and what they did when the fur trade played out. That is how Kit Carson got into the...

    HISTORY CHANNEL Mountain Men

I've seen it on a couple of occassions and I liked it. I did watch the whole thing today and enjoyed it a lot. I found that it was pretty much accurate historically. I'm no expert though and I'm sure that there are some on this forum that will take exception to a few deviations from the accepted...

    Nice hawk handles

I bought an extra fancy grade handle from Hawkins Knife Making Supplies and was greatly disapointed. It was Maple, but there was only figuer on one side and that was only about half way up the handle. You do what you think is right, but I wont order from them again.

    Have a question

Flintlocks are definitely female. It isn't so much the amount of primer you put into the pan, it's how you put it into the pan. Try banking it up so that the sparks from the burning primer are thrown into the touch hole, like maybe just a little semi-circle around the touch hole.

    Three little Blunderbuss's

Dang, and I thought that this thread was going to be a fary tale about blowing houses down and fighting off the big bad wolf.

    was I wrong???

They wouldn't be copywrighted. They would be patented. I believe that a patent would only apply if you sold the gun or intended to sell it. But then again, I'm not a Lawyer. I have a real job.

It does apprear to be 4WD, but is it standard or automatic transmission? I can't see the gear shift lever in the photo. :hmm:

    Barrel Twist

My apologies to Roundball. I know that this question was directed at him, but it got me to thinking. I shoot flint exclusively. Why?, well I know that it sounds a little silly, but it's beause a flintlock "looks right" to me. That is not to take away from or denegrate a cap lock. It's just that...
