    during the mountainman era they certainly had to make mocs on occaission but if you read the journals and memiors it seems they would trade for them. For a small bit of trade goods you could get several pair of mocs.

    While looking through the 1848 to 1851 inventories of Fort Union trading post I noticed that each year they list a repeating rifle. The 1849 inventory say" 1 repeating rifle (16 shot)". What do you think they are refering to?

    I have been drying hamburger for 20 years to use when backpacking. I get the leanest burger, cook it in a skillet. Occaissionaly tilt the skillet and spoon out any grease or liquid. When meat is cooked I usually dump it on paper towells to pat away any grease that may be on it. Then it goes...

    Bents Old Fort is one of the most complete reconstructions on the National Park Service. Check out their website. It was a privately owned fur trading post, built primarily to trade for buffalo robes from the plains indians. Operated from 1833-1849

    Washing Hudson Bay Blanket?

    If you don't want to use woolite, use a soap specially made to wash down sleeping bags and other down gear. It is formulated so it will not wash out the vital oils that make down work. I suspect it would be equally good for wool.
