    Crisco

With our 100+ degree weather and dry as a bone fire hazard, I haven't shot in a while. The lube would be like dipping the patch in water because of the heat.

    Interesting T/C Peep Sight

A peep mounted that far forward will work for anyone with good eyesight, and can still use a standard rear iron sight. Those of us as mentioned need it as close to the eye as possible.

Something to hunt this deer season

I'm no expert judging the age of a deer, but that one looks like a young buck bodywise. I'm guessing 3 1/2 year old. You have some fantastic genetics.

How far can a ball travel?

The question should be, "if I fire my rifle at a target at 100 yards, and the round ball continues on after I missed, how far would the ball travel?" :idunno:

    Good Hawken article in ML

I've owned my Cabela's Hawken since the early nineties, and I think I paid in the neighborhood of $300 and change, and that same rifle today is double what I paid. I'm guess I'm pretty easy to please as long as the rifle shoots so good, it doesn't know that it's not supposed to since it isn't a...

long range shooting with patched round ball

My furthest deer taken with my .54 Hawken was 84 paces. That was four paces past my personal limit. My range finder is my legs, and I'll either pace off my max distance and put a pile of rocks or a downed log or just a certain tree to mark my kill zone. It will do the job if you do yours!

    taking aim

Exactly!...As a hunter you want as little movement as possible. and waving a barrel up and down is a sure way to see that white tail waving at you.

I'm sure the defenders will be along shortly! :shake:

Black Powder - refresh me please...

I'm curious because I also shoot T7, and I noticed that when I swab the bore after a shot, that it doesn't seem to have burned completely, noticing a few granuals each time after running the patch. Wouldn't that negate the accuracy of weighing the charge with T7 especially? I also shoot minute...

Black Powder - refresh me please...

If you read something on the internet it's got to be true!.....Right? Lot's of false info gets tossed around these days, and it's hard to figure out whats fact and whats fiction, unless you try it yourself.

Why are or aren't you an NMLRA member?

According to your reply, then this forum and even shooting these Vegan versions seems pointless, and maybe we all should be taking up another hobby than wasting our time shooting these superficial at best rifles? Sorry, and maybe I'm the one who is wrong here, but until the day this forum...

Why are or aren't you an NMLRA member?

I think you are missing the point. Traditional muzzle loader reproductions are as close to the original as one can expect to get when it comes to HC. The Modern unmentionalbles have no soul, and have very little in common with the 1800's but only by name, with anything that could be remotely...

    Possibles bag

Get yourself a ball bag (pouch) which will keep them from rolling around, and you can attach it to your belt or it's easy to find it reaching into the bag. Also sewing in a pocket inside the bag will help keep things organized as well. There are things that can easily be done to personalize it...

Range Report: 6 rounds then the lock broke

After reading the OP, I immediately thought the same thing. :hmm: B'sides even if an original replacement last you another 25+ years your eyesight and fingers may not work as good as they are now trying to replace it again, and your grandkids will love you for it! :haha:

    Possibles bag

The next time you go out to shoot, whether it be hunting, or just shooting at a target a few times. Load into your possibles bag only those items that will allow you to shoot and swab your bore between shots and clean after you are done. Leave all the rest at least 100 yards from where you...

Why are or aren't you an NMLRA member?

I'm just asking this question, but is there a modern In-line hunters magazine, or a club for the unmentionables? If they put on a shoot and a few guys showed up with traditional muzzle loaders would they be looked at as odd balls, and be the target of some jokes? How about if a guy showed up...

    Good Hawken article in ML

This is interesting as I believe it was a couple of back magazines I read, and in the letters to the editor where someone complained that most of the articles were focused on custom guns, and a lack of articles on the modern reproductions. The person who complained hit a good point in that most...

    Possibles bag

I'm pretty much a minimalist and my bag isn't period correct, so it's more practical in that I carry what I need whether I'm hunting or just going out to punch paper. Things that I know I don't need stay at home.

Why are or aren't you an NMLRA member?

In my neck of the woods, any kind of NRA or hunting related sticker on the back window of your vehicle is Like a neon sign to all the thieves who see it, and it screams that you have guns, and there is always the possiblility that they will follow you home and mark your house as a target for...
