    Need help identifying this!

Welcome to the forum. Your pistol is strictky a non-functioning decorator and was never made to fire. As such, it has very little monetary value. But it belonged to your great grandparents so its sentimental value to you is certainly off the charts. Keep it, display it, treasure it.

Rehardening frizzens - one size fits all? Musings for metallurgy masterminds....

Got to join in here. Seems like whenever I read about someone using Kasenit to harden a frizzen face, they follow the directions that come with the product. Those directions weren't written with frizzen hardening in mind. I bought a lot of Kasenit when it was available (fortunately) and use it...

    Shrunk stock

Here's what I've done in the past with two different 1816 Springfields - I made a mixture of half BLO and half mineral spirits and painted a very thin coating on with a 3/4 inch paintbrush everywhere; in the lock mortise, inside the barrel channel, on the buttplate area, everywhere. I let it set...

    1861 Springfield hammer adjustment

I, too, have an ArmiSport '61. Just for comparison, the leading edge of the hammer is 3/8" from the tip of the nipple at half cock. At full cock it's 1 1/8" from the nipple. How does that compare to yours? I've had mine for around 20 years and it fires off caps just fine.

    Buying Original?

If you're going to go original, the 1842 is your best bet if you ever need parts since that was the first model that had interchangable parts; previously muskets were made "to a pattern" and parts, although surprisingly similar, might could need just a minor bit of tweaking to fit. I've had very...

Thanks, Mark. Never a dull moment in your videos, and this one was a lot of work! Way to go.

1816 musket conversions to rifled by Colt.

Thanks for posting this. I've got a couple of 1816s with the cone-in-barrel conversion and I learned a bit about them today.

SOLD Traditions Percussion Kentucky Rifle 50cal

Okay, to be fair he said " percussion long rifle flintlock" which covers all the bases. Also said "The Stock was made in one piece" which could mean a number of things. It is a nice looking rifle.

any idea who made this lock? marked with H H

Is it just me or does that mainspring look like it's set to fail at the main V-bend? I know it's a casting but still.....

    flint and frizzen

That "washboard" look would go across the frizzen, not from top to bottom and doesn't necessarily mean a worn-out frizzen, just a well used one - often with a lot of life left in it.

    flint and frizzen

Must be missing something here. I don't see a problem with that frizzen. Those grooves were put there at the factory with the intention ( I think) of making that frizzen spark better. Don't know if it works or not but I've seen that feature on several different models of flintlock locks over the...

Military Heritage India-made Fusil de Chasse

I think this viewpoint may have surfaced in this mile-long thread but I'll put it out there again. Some of us cannot afford the upper priced muskets; those India-made firearms are the only ones in our price range. And the response to that is usually " save up, even if it takes time". That...

    Restoring abused guns

That 1861 Springfield has progressive depth rifling; deeper near the breech, shallower towards the muzzle. Lapping that kind of bore is problemetic at best. There may be a suitable method that I'm not aware of (not that uncommon) but I wouldn't attempt it myself and I've successfully lapped...

    Wall hanger identification

Initially, I recognized the sideplate. Then, after downloading the photos where you can see the entire rifle and seeing the patchbox, lock and barrel pin bezels (not the right name, I know) it's easy to see it's a Hopkins & Allen Minuteman. I had one in the early 1970's and, through the help of...

    Euroarms Kentuckian .44 caliber questions

Like Pete G I also owned one. The ramrod was short and came with a screw-on extension. No help for it. If you can hunt deer with a .44 where you live that ramrod combo will be okay for the field. For target shooting - a range rod is usually a good idea anyway.

    QUESTION OUT THERE..

There's also a crack forward of the lock mortise, fairly well pronounced. We're talking a stock well over a century and a half old. If it were me (and I'm well aware its not) I might shoot it once just to say I did, clean it thoroughly and display it in a place of honor. Something caused that...
