I just got a copy of Joe Kindig's book

I have a signed, numbered first printing that sells for anywhere from 5-600$ when you can find them.

ID - TC or Lyman Lock?

TC Hawken including the screw and the side plate. It is just like the one on my Hawken kit gun. Also identical to my New englander except for on that one the side plate (looks like a thick washer) is blue instead of brass.

    barrel tennons

Zonie, Can you describe how to make a jig like the one you pictured? It looks like it would be a handy thing to have.

Kindig's Thoughts on the kentucky rifle in its Golden Age

Sorry to hear about the water damage. I know it probably ruined a lot more than your muzzle loading books. I noticed when looking up the value of my book that a plain 3rd or 4th printing is going for about 75 bucks, which probably doesn't make you feel any better.

Kindig's Thoughts on the kentucky rifle in its Golden Age

I was looking at a couple of my Muzzle loading books with my sons tonight and had to bring out my copy of Kindig's "Thoughts on the Kentucky rifle in it's golden age". I received it from my mother years ago as a gift and never really thought much about it except for the great history and photos...

    muzzleloader ownership question

As a lot of the other posts state, Find the answer from a reputable source like the state ag or lawyer. Due to possible consequences, it would be crazy to take advice based on hearsay or the "friend of a friend variety". The possible ramifications of making a mistake and winding up in jail are...

    >50 cal. New Englander

70gr 2Fg and .018 ticking patch with .490 ball and natural lube. This load drops deer like a champ. Mine also likes Lee R.E.A.L 250gr bullets with 70gr 2F as well.

    Cast Bullet Lube

I have one of those, they don't work very well in my experience. Plus, they still use the wonderlube.

    Cast Bullet Lube

Recently I cast a bunch of Lee R.E.A.L. bullets for my .50 cal. Usually, I have been lubing them up with TC bore butter as I have a large amount on hand. However, this gets really messy so that I usually do it right before shooting at the range and of coarse the borebutter gets all over...

    Starting all over from scratch

I shoot prb and Lee R.E.A.L 250 gr bullets from my New Englander which has a similar barrel, both with 70gr of FFg powder. It shoots the same point of impact with either and both loads drop a deer equally as well.

Can This Dutch Oven Be Saved?

Check out this site for full instructions for electrolysis at home with a dutch oven. It will look brand new when finished. http://www.wag-society.org/Electrolysis/electros.php

    Dutch Oven cooking

DO cooking is lots of fun. Try looking at the IDOS website. They have lots of recipes and info on Dutch ovens, even a recipe for restoring old iron through home electrolysis.

Peep sight on a LH GPR?

I have a T?C peep on my New Englander. The gunsmith that installed it gave me a large aperture ring that is lined in brass that is almost the same size as the hole it screws into. The brass really makes a difference in how well you can see in low light conditions. I am sure you could get one...

    T/C hunting peep sight

I have one on my New Englander and it makes a world of diference. I also have a second apature which is larger and rimmed with brass that really makes it easy to use in low light in combination with a white bead front site. Makes it a lot easier to see when in the woods or early and late in the day.

    makin a smoothbore

As far as hunting in NJ, you can use a rifled barrel muzzleloader during the regular shotgun season. It's only if you want to hunt the permit shotgun season that you have to have a smooth bore. There is a chart on page 30 of the Hunting digest that lay's it all out. Wasn't sure which one you...

    When to clean between shots?

I find that if I need to clean/wipe between shots, it is because I am having trouble getting the patch and ball down the bore easily. I usually gage weather I need to wipe based on ease of loading, and just make sure the flashhole and breech area are clear and dry before reloading.

    T/C Touchhole liners

Thanks guys, I guess I'll have to "un-cheap" myself and spend a few bucks to give one a try.

    T/C Touchhole liners

I have a T/C Hawken Flintlock that I made up from a kit about 5 or years ago. I always seem to get a lot of hangfires with it when shooting at the range. I have read on the board that T/C redesigned the touch hole liners that they use and they work much better than the older ones (like what is...

    .56 Renegade

I have killed a number of deer with .50 cal roundball pushed with 70gr of FFg and never had one run off on me yet. I would think that it would work just fine.

    Lee R.E.A.L. conicals

I have used them in a TC New Englander with good resultsin a .50 1:48 barrel. They work well when you want a little more thump than a round ball. However, the deer don't seem to be able to tell the difference between the real and a roundball.
