    Removing Lead Oxide From Roundballs

I used Drano, the sodium hydroxide reacts with the lead oxide to remove it. I don't recall how much I used but put some Drano in a ceramic bowl with water and watch it bubble away.

You forgot Russ Hamm for another lock builder back in the day. I built a rifle with a Haddaway lock and it was a top notch performer.

    Knife experts to identify?

To revive an old thread... I am currently modifying a modern Russell Green River 6" blade from the 3 'rivet' pattern to pins ala' the MuzzleBlast articles from Sept/Oct 2006 on mountain men knives. That article describes 'half tang' tapered grips or 'full tang' non tapered grips (tapering...

How to adjust set trigger T/C Patriot

Sounds like something is gumming up the works. To remove the trigger unit you need to remove the barrel/loosen the lock. There is a screw just below and ahead of the breech plug area that goes through the wood into the forward trigger unit. Remove that, and the brass screw at the back of the...

How to adjust set trigger T/C Patriot

Look behind the trigger guard, behind the rear trigger on the outside of the brass, where it curves up back into the wood. You'll see a small hex-head screw. There's your adjustment. In/more sensitive, out/less sensitive. At least that's what's on my T/C Patriot, in my hot little hands at...

How to clean the oxidation off of round balls?

Not that it matters, but I've cleaned up Civil War minies using granulated Drano (sodium Hydroxide) in a little water, boils the stuff right off. Doesn't make them shiny, just removes the white stuff to dull lead. FWIW.

    Knife experts to identify?

In a collection of rondy stuff from my dad I came across the following butcher knife. I'm gathering that it is 'post 1840's' but would appreciate any information on the time frames it could have been made and/or possibly traded. My guess is that it is not terribly old but it sure looks it...

    Raised carving/stock finish

I have a problem with stock finish around the fine edges of my raised carving. Seems that when I 0000steel wool the finish to smooth and knock the glare off the bulk of the stock it is rather difficult to get in close to where the carving is and I'm left with a shiny area in close. I can only...

    What is it?

Must confess that I'm of the Fess Parker/Davy Crockett era and have been shooting/building/rendezvousing since I was 16 years old. Also enjoy immensely shooting my old Garand and 03A3 Springfield. That said, my best story is from teaching (read re-qualifying) a local Guard Unit with their...

    Miller Artwork

I am researching blue capotes and have seen 3 versions of Miller's 'Trapper's Bride' and 3 different capotes on the future groom! One version of blue capote even has leather fringe hanging off the arms. The field sketches of course were to help him crank out x-numbers of copies in later years...

    Paul Kane/HBC Officer Blue Capote

In regards to making accurate equipage and clothing, I am trying to locate a painting/sketch that Paul Kane did in regards to his travels apx. 1846 through to Oregon territory and N. California. The art in question shows an HBC company officer in a blue capot, in some detail. The art is...
