    Couple of questions....

I have hunted with a Lyman plains rifle with a 28 in barrol for the last 30 years. The older I get the farther down the barrol I need my sights and I have just about run out of barrol on this rifle. I would buy a minimum of 28 in barrol in a 54 and longer if it doesn't completly turn you off...

    round ball trap

Slam fire I have wondered if a person could make a snail trap out of a truck tire my standing it up faceing you and cutting a hole in the top tread for the bullets to enter and let them run around inside until they ran out of energy.

    45caliber

I shoot a 40,45,50,54. I started with a 54 and hunted Elk and Deer.Have killed several of each and we have not lost any crippled Elk as yet. My sons and I use 100 gr of 2f and round ball. Some say that is excessive but it works for me. I think big is better for large game. I used the same...

    Gun Safety

At our range several years ago one of our members had a priming horn blow up hanging around his neck. He primed his rifle aimed and when he shot the horn blew up. The horn had a mechanical plug that still seemed ok after we finally found it. There was just little pieces of the horn scattered...

    Trophy Hunting and Sportsmanship

I think I should get in White Buffalos camp on this one. The shows I have seen of trophy hunters shooting game on TV that I get the impreshion they wouldn't eat them, them selves turn me off and I think it sends the wrong signel to the people setting on the fence. I killed one fine black...

    The .40 for huntin g...

My older son and I both shoot 40 for every thing except Deer and Elk. 54 for that.He decited he wanted to kill a Deer with the 40. One shot and it was just as dead as the 54 do it. As said befor, it is all about shot placement and a bigger ball does not fix a bad shot.

    Maxi-Hunter performance on game?

pab1 I saw my son shoot a fork buck this year with a tc maxie. He hit it in the shoulder through bone and was under the hide on the far side. He was loaded with 100 gr of 2f and shooting 50 feet or less. The slug when retreved was 1/4 in thick and the same size in diameter as a quarter. I...

    On deer calibers

I have killed 3 Elk and more deer than that with my 54 prb Liman Planes rifle. I load 100 gr of 2ff. I build a fire in it and I don't begrudge the loss of one load of powder in the last 6 shots by loading heaveyer than necessary. I never feel the recoil either when shooting at game. I try to...

You can only have one muzzeloader and your heading to the hills

Lyman Planes rifle, 54 cal. It has all ready killed a couple of everything I hunt. The fancy VO guns would have to stay in the safe.

    O.K., What now Coach?

Get or build a powder measure so you know what amount of powder you are useing. Use it to load the gun, not directly from the can.(safety reasons) Extra flints, Oil or bore butter to treat the rifle after you have cleaned it. Clean the rifle after each days use. Black powder is not like...

    Long gong

Thanks Robert for the post The ballistic calculator tells it all. Both rifles sighted in the same distance are about the same for drop and the windage is more for the 40 but not as much as I thought it might be. 5 mph wind is not much either. At 15 it would really show up the differance. Any...

    Long gong

Thanks for the reply Brett. I have always kind of been in plinks camp on this. But I like the 40 so well I am going to try it. I can miss a 1/2 in pipe at times with out a brezz. Probably should not blame the rifle for that though.

    Long gong

I appreciate the openion from you both. I love shooting the 40 and it is dead on to 50 yards. I think I had better take both rifles to the range and set them up at about 150 yards and see the drop diff. The windage? guess I'll try it. Thanks

    Long gong

I shoot a 40 on the trail and hunt and do the long gong with a 54 with about 90 gr of 2f. The question I have is how would the 40 compare with the 54 for ball drop and drift if it also was loaded to max. Some times the long gong pushes 200 yards.

    54 cal. Lyman

I have to agree with the profesor. On my old lyman planes rifle it burnes every thing I have tried to shoot. Mostly 2f goex. The screw that pluggs the fire channel froze up so I drilled it out and replaced it. I take it and the nipple out every time I clean. I also use lots of water to wash...

hangfire from load kept in gun for 2 days

When I shoot the trail I snap 2 caps load up and start the day. Clean at the end of every day. When hunting I go to the shop the night befor snap a couple caps, pull the nipple and blow compressed air in hipple hole till I am sure all oil is gone. Put in 100 gr of 2f and a bore buttered patch...

    Trouble with custom rifle

I agree with Rebble with a shim. You can get a cheap set of feeler guages from auto parts. Clamp them together and drill a hole the proper size for your drumb. Pick out the thickness that makes it come tight in the right place.Trim the outside to fit the drumb and install.

    Can anyone identify this?

I think you will like your lyman plains rifle. Nothing fancy, just a good work horse. Mine has served me well for 30 years. I can check with my son and see if he rembers where he got the heaveyer hammar spring if you need it. I never had a problem with the first spring but changed it any...
