Ease and accuracy of shooting. 1851 Navy vs 1858 Remington. Thoughts?

I like both, but between the two I prefer the Remington. I know I'm a weirdo, but I like the feel of it and I like the sights better. Haven't had much issue with it gumming up either. The Colt has it beat on looks any day of the week though.

    Another Balistol question

Ballistol has worked very well for me with my Milsurps and Blackpowder, but climate control is more important than what gun oil you use.

    Black Powder Revolvers - Antiques

A lot of people on GB and online don't take C&Rs any longer either.

    Wedge basics

Wisecoaster is right. Put the wedge in until its hand-tight, and then I usually give it a tap with the handle of my mallet.

    Lack of cylinder safety pins

    Yep that’d work too

    Lack of cylinder safety pins

Its like an original! Unless you plan on carrying it, I wouldn't worry too much. go to the range, load 6 and bang away. IF you do want to carry it or hunt with it, then the safest thing is to load 5-you don't need the 6th unless you're in Indian territory. Most of the original colts I have...

    Value of original 1851 Navy

I'm not an expert. These are things I would personally check for. Where did he get the revolver from? Any history on the revolver is good to have. Check the markings and see if they are correct and that the serial numbers match. The grip frame, grips(marked with pencil on the inside)...

    Reducing cocking effort

Historically they would lighten the mainspring by shimming them. You take a thin metal shim and shim the mainspring at the bottom of the frame where it screws into the frame. Just shim the bottom so when you tighten the screw the mainspring tilts forward. Beer can works great for this. cut...

    Perfect revolver?

Has a navy grip, round barrel, no recoil shield, and maybe its just me, but the bore axis feels lower in my hand than the navy or the 1860 army.

    Perfect revolver?

I'd like to throw the .44 Dance & Brothers into the mix. Good aesthetics and good handling.

    Repro 1849 Revolver

.319 might be on the small side. You might wait and mic the chambers and see what those are before you get a mold. Some guys will use up to a .330 round ball. I use a .323 in my original, granted its 157 years old. Ideally it should shave a small ring of lead when you load it into the chamber.

    why not the notch?

With regards to carrying cap and ball revolvers on the pins or notches, one thing I have noticed is that original Colts and Remington's have really heavy mainsprings. Reproductions have really light mainsprings in comparison. The heavy mainsprings make it real hard for the hammer to be...

BEWARE OF FEDEX AND COLLECTING TEXAS.

Not all Fedex guys are bad. I took time and talked to mine and have gotten to know him. Told him if he ever wanted to save a stop he can drop everything off at my business (he does both the business and my house). I've never had an issue with Fedex, and the one time I did have damage my driver...

Wow - cap-and-ball revolvers are awesome fun, who knew?

I don't know how they'd get those screws in that tight! You sneeze on them and they strip out.

Let's Talk About Real Pine Tree Turpentine and BLO.

I make a Finn Mix using 2 parts pine tar, 1 part turpentine, and 1 part BLO, and I have used both "real" and hardware store stuff and I have never noticed a difference. Your mileage may vary though.

    1861 Uberti Navy Civilian

I agree with you on Uberti. I bought three Ubertis in the last two years and they all had issues. They look great but their finishing work and fitment leave a lot to be desired. My Walker had a nipple that was torqued on so tight I had to use a breaker bar to loosen it.

Shooting Military rifles like they were designed to be used

    Should be the Boxer Cartridge!

Shooting Military rifles like they were designed to be used

I just read Brett Gibbons “The English Cartridge” and he mentioned that Federal Troops were taught that they could be used in their rifles, but it doesn’t sound like the North actually imported them. Just used captured ammunition.
