May I ask where you found the base with the screw in plug?

    Weighing round balls

I haven't cast a round ball since I was 15 years old. I have cast a lot of sinkers in lots of sizes and configurations. I may pass on the bear hunt tomorrow and fire up the lead pot.

    Weighing round balls

How many weigh their lead balls and what is the variance which is acceptable? I sat down today and started weighing some for my .58 Colonial. What an eye opening experience that was. Weights all over the place. I culled anything outside of 1 grain from an average. Hornady was hands down the...

One step at a time. The'll outlaw the use of lead for target shooting soon. Then any shooting in a national forest, then..............

    Browning an already blued rifle.

I just did the same thing, and I removed the blue just to be sure it wasn't an issue. Came out just fine. I used a file then 220 sand paper. Much easier than filing a new barrel.

Questions about Lead projectiles in CA For Hunting

Just for the heck of it, I just called the wardens service in California and asked if "antique firearms" like flintlock rifles were exempt from the lead projectile law. I was told the law is,"black and white" and that lead is prohibited no matter what the firearm is.

Questions about Lead projectiles in CA For Hunting

Like a letter from CDFW stating the rule does NOT apply to "antique firearms". All ML clubs in California should band together and get this issue settled for the good of all their members.

Questions about Lead projectiles in CA For Hunting

I'd be a bit cautious to hang my hat on the word, "antique". Afterall it's one of the fascist states we are talking about. If it were me, I'd consult an attorney, and keep his card handy for when some woke F&W officer decides to make an example out of you. Oregon has been talking about the lead...

Yes it is. Money well spent. I can't wait to see what it looks like when finished! Kibler's just keeps raising the bar.

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Took delivery of another Kibler kit. The "above grade" maple is impressive. I tried to get a couple pics with some water on the wood. The curl is consistent from end to end. Once again, Kibler products show up better than expected.

Modifying iron nitrate stain on curly maple with dye

The sun finally came out. This shows the color contrast better than the first pic.

Modifying iron nitrate stain on curly maple with dye

Both. The honey maple stain and the yellow trans tint. The stock was a pale yellow before I used the iron nitrate. The trick is how far you go with the rub back process. I ended up adding more yellow trans tint after the iron nitrate. It is a bit brighter in the natural light than the pic shows.

Modifying iron nitrate stain on curly maple with dye

Yes. It worked better than staining after. I was trying for a light gold/amber color.

    Round ball for .58 caliber

Somehow, I missed the "smoothbore" part of your post. (this could help explain some of my targets as of late) Mine is a rifle.

    Round ball for .58 caliber

I purchased a couple bags of .570 to get started. Also a LEE .575 mold. I was looking for a .570 mold but couldn't find one. I haven't done any real testing yet, so I can't say which size is going to be best. I predict you are going to love that rifle. I sure enjoyed shooting mine.

I missed that too. My Colonial is a .58.
