File & rasp sharpening service review

I'm about to start a plank build, and I do not like dull files and rasps. I sent some off to Boggs Tool Processing to try them out, and can report prompt excellent service: That big ole antique 14" Black Diamond rasp is sharp as a razor now [I remember my dad using it around the farm in the...

Davis Goulcher & Chambers Mountain Style locks - similar?

Is the Chambers Mountain lock #L-6 (link) similar enough to the Davis Goulcher (link) in size, sear position, etc, that it could be somewhat correct in a rifle designed for the Goulcher? I.e. maybe in a Vincent?

Stock finish drying time in winter

I've searched all the older posts and threads. Any newer hints or cheats from the experts for helping cure or dry finishes in winter? Can anything be added to Tried & True to act as a sort of catalyst? I may ultimately build a drying cabinet, but this week I've had good success just propping up...

    Brass casting flaws

Check out the voids and slag in this butt plate: As usual it's in the worst place it can be. I hit it with the belt sander, and the deeper I go the worse it gets. It doesn't seem to be all the way through, but how deep to I need to go - paper thin LOL? Any way, just venting, I hate casting...

    Flintlock Underhammer Rifle

Anyone in here ever built a flintlock underhammer rifle? I was intrigued by the mechanics of operation of the underhammer flintlock mechanism [ LINK ] shown on Ethan Yazel's recent blog*. Is flash burn an issue on the wrist of the arm when shooting offhand, necessitating an archery-like arm...

    SDI Muzzleloader Lab booklet

Anybody know where I can get maybe a used copy of the booklet or study guide that goes with the Sonoran Desert Institute muzzleloader lab? I think it's titled: "Muzzleloader Lab, 2nd edition, ISBN 978-1-945697-33-3" . I wonder if you can download .pdf copies, etc? I've searched their web site...

Re-hashing an old subject - cap keepers w/pistol primers

RE this old thread> SPP in place of Percussion Caps Did any of you have any luck getting those to fire pistol/rifle primers? Was wondering how they would fire without a firing pin protrusion on the hammer face. I'm not out of caps or anything, and I have a couple of Mag-Sparks, but am always...

    Lightening a worm stain...

...for example, like this: Anyone tried strong bleach, or maybe diluted muriatic acid, etc, applied with a small brush along the stain? Or maybe even mask it off and fog a light water- based paint coat over it? Had any success with other methods?

Early 1700's French "Woods Runner's" Long Arms?

Question for muzzleloader history buffs: If one were to stop his time machine in 1702-1711 or so at Fort Louis de La Louisiane at La Mobile, and encountered the coureur des bois, or "woods runner" in the attached pic, what long arm would he be bearing? Ignore the above. Properly dressed...

Brass spacer on Jeremiah's Hawken forestock?

I saw it mentioned in another venue, and after reviewing a screen shot of where Jeremiah Johnson was drawing a bead on a deer running across a snow field, it's plainly visible: Field expedient repair? Inlet adornment? Optical illusion? It doesn't seem to extend up to the barrel.

    Powder measure error

Something else to watch for: just noticed the bottom of my powder measure had cracked, and backed out quite a bit, so I was throwing probably 5+ grains high. I tapped it back together and will solder it up solid. It's always something, huh.

    Another Friendship Woods Walk Question

I'll call them Monday, but it being the weekend thought I'd go ahead and ask here: In the 701 and 711 Woods Walk matches [link], are you restricted to using PRB's only?

Questions on finishing technique on Kibler lock

Getting a reasonable poor-to-fair finish on the trigger guard casting for my Woodsrunner was not a good experience. It makes me approach the finishing of the lock plate, cock, and frizzen with mucho fear and trepidation. Can someone give me a Cliffs Notes quickie on what they did to smooth out...

Dedicated woods walk rifle, range, loads, etc?

I asked this in another thread sorta off topic, so I would like to ask again here. Do y'all normally zero a dedicated rifle at a some set distance just for woods walks? My .50 hunting rifle is zeroed at 50 yds w/55 gr 2f. So, would I keep that charge and "Kentucky elevation" hold high or low...

    1st time attending Friendship

Old man, but a relative novice to the latest muzzleloader trends, LOL. Thought maybe wife and I might drive up and investigate the Friendship Spring National Shoot. Since my only non-inline muzzleloader is an "un-cool" Trad KY percussion, should I just leave it at home and go to observe only, or...

Pedersoli Frontier or Cabelas Blue Ridge on the rack?

Does anyone know of a retail establishment, sporting good store, pawn, etc, anywhere in the S.E. or midwest US that has a Pedersoli Frontier or a Cabela's Blue RIdge rifle in stock, flint .45 preferred, on the rack that I can pick up and inspect? Might make it part of a open itinerary driving...

Question on Pedersoli smoothbore flintlock breeches

Do the breeches on the Pedersoli flintlock smoothbores and muskets vary from the originals? Do they incorporate variations of the patent/Nock/false breeches in place of historically correct flat breeches? Conversely, are patent breeches historically correct for some of these? Same question for...
