    Gunsmithing screwdrivers

Some of the tool makers that made SnapOn.. also made a surprising number of Craftsman tools as well. As we all know.. or should.. Craftsman does NOT make tools. They simply contract with tool makers for build and badge. A lot of Craftsman chainsaws were made by Husqvarna, drills were made by...

    Gunsmithing screwdrivers

You WILL break tips, no matter who makes the tools, when you get burly with them. Thats a given. Some break easier than others. Chapman are in the Tough catagory. And Chapman makes replacements for all their tips. The "gunsmith kits" pretty much cover every size you are ever going to need. I...

Went Hunting and Left my .54 loaded for 3 days

It should be noted that WD40 is a very.. very poor protectant. It was designed to displace water...liquid water and it does a fair job of it. Its also not bad as a cutting fluid for steel and a so so tapping fluid, best used on aluminum. It is pretty just Stoddard Fluid (a type of kerosene) and...

    Piece of Junk

I was over at a aquaintences house, showing him how to use his new to him mig welder and I happened to notice the front end of a BP rifle tucked under some lumber. I asked him about it and he said it was something his brother had and as his brother had died about 15 yrs ago, it was just...

Ramrod ends - Steel or Wood?

I still use fiberglass ramrods on all of my front stuffers. Ive broken too many wooden ramrods.. generally the ones that came with guns or kits. I will wipe down the fiberglass ram rod whenever I clean the gun its on. Id rather have a green or odd brown rod than have all the problems noted in...

Need help....Have a cva hawken rifle with ball stuck in it,,,

I acquired a mid 1950s S&W 38/44 Outdoorsman that was in 98% condition. Guy brought it to me and said he had a bullet stuck in the barrel. Looking at the barrel/cylinder gap.. I could indeed see guilding metal jacket. No problem, got out my range rod to drive it back into the cylinder and it...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

Dragged a couple pistols out of the vault and cleaned them up, in preparation for taking them to the range tommorow. On is an import, the other is a Colt 3rd generation. 1851. I actually prefer the import as the trigger guard is considerably bigger and fits my trigger finger, unlike the Colt...

Why does smokeless powder peel open a muzzleloader like a banana?

You can see in the chart that once a certain point is reached.. in this case 110grs.. the maximum burn rate/speed levels out quite dramatically. In the loadings between 120 and 150 grs, a 30 gr difference.. speed only increases 67fps. Yet a 10 gr differential between 50-60 grains is over 100...

Why does smokeless powder peel open a muzzleloader like a banana?

The reason one never shoots smokeless in BP guns is 2 fold. 1. Burn rate... lay black powder on a paper plate and toss in a match.. and you get a Woooff! and a cloud of smoke. Do the same with smokeless powder and you get a Fizzzelllll. Why is this? Because black powder is a very low order...

REPAIR on RIFLING - old original austrian Jaeger rifle

As an American who tinkers with old firearms.. Id say simply, go shoot it and enjoy it. Those two pits are of no consequence. Just make sure you clean it well after every shoot, and it will last another few hundred years.

Ranger report CVA Mountain Rifle Blondie

If one has a TIG welder and some small electrodes, I cant think of a negative reason visa vis welding stuff to the barrel. Now if he used a stick welder... chuckle.. thats another thing all together...

Found a NIB CVA Kentucky Rifle Kit

Thanks! Ive got a reasonably equipped home hobby shop, 2 milling machines, 2 lathes, surface grinder.. etc etc (I repair machinery in machine shops for a living for the past 26 yrs) so I believe I have the gear to do this. What does the "vent liner" consist of?
