It's definitely at a time when you would want to have a pretty firm grip on patterns to be effective. I have had good luck with early muzzleloader season in Pennsylvania, but it took some stout intel on where the deer wanted to be.- Six-Gun

^^This. I killed my first deer ever on public land in Nebraska with a muzzleloader. It's a statewide tag and a late season, so the cold weather takes away a large amount of the competition on public land. Big and plentiful deer to be had if you are dressed appropriately for the conditions.- Six-Gun
