Congratulations on a fine hunt, Walkingeagle! Those hard-earned hunts are the best kind.

    Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season ?

Thank you! That’s good info and thanks for that insight. I had no clue what that buck weighed, I just knew that it sucked pulling him

    Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season ?

It's definitely at a time when you would want to have a pretty firm grip on patterns to be effective. I have had good luck with early muzzleloader season in Pennsylvania, but it took some stout intel on where the deer wanted to be.

    Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season ?

The Midwest, in general - Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas, in particular - has just insanely big deer. If you want to take a smokepole out on public land with a legit shot at a giant buck, these states give you as good a shot as any. Just to give you an idea of what you can bag on public...

    2019 Colorado Buck

That's about as perfect as you can place a shot. Very well done and congrats on a great buck!

    Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season ?

That's a great question, Ricochet, and I wish I knew the answer! We never did get a weight on him. As you can imagine, it took an ETERNITY to get him out of the woods. With me and a buddy pulling together, we could barely move him 5 yards so I could get him in a position to field dress (he...

    Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season ?

I think it's one of those deals that serves as an extremely low pressure hunt opportunity reserved for residents, so they may not be concerned about overall participation unless it gets exceedingly low. They do the same thing with their Fall turkey season: residents only. It's a killer as an...

That's a superb shot with the big boomer. Nice job! How far did he run? :p

My custom wheellock is on it's way

Here's to your health and seeing that lovely gadget make some smoke! I just saw the video and that is a fine piece of workmanship. I can't fathom the time required to make one.

That should make for a supremely cool and rare build!

    out of state hunting trips?

PA is a pretty incredible state as far as access. I want to say that the public land available is something crazy like 4 million acres. It's nuts considering that it's one of the long settled states in the country with a fairly high population. They have preserved a lot of high quality public...

    Flying with a Muzzleloader

I have flown with a hardcased flintlock into Colorado and Canada. The latter was funny, if for no other reason than the poor Canadian girl at customs not knowing what to do with a gun with no serial number. It took her a minute to discuss the protocol with her fellow agents, but in short...

    Pyrodex Vs. Traditional Black

My flinters only behave well with real BP. Years back, when I took the leap from modern inlines to traditional guns, I thought you could just pour 777 down the bore of a flintlock, put some 4F in the pan and go shoot. That ended in a lot of swearing and a screw extraction, all the while...

Total Noob looking for guideance from the old pros here

Congrats on getting started! You are correct in your assumption that the warning is a prohibition specifically against smokeless powder use. You are just fine using those synthetic pellets that the former owner included with the deal within the gun's published limits. However, if you are...

When hunting do you dress the part?

Good luck out there on your elk hunt! I really do respect the guys that go all out and dress period correct. It adds a whole other level of authenticity to the experience. While I live in Nebraska now on military orders, a part of my heart still lives in Pennsylvania where I grew up, where a...

When hunting do you dress the part?

I'll be the first to admit that I do not dress the part. I tend to go "modern retro" - that is, modern clothes/traditional BP firearm. Nothing wrong with going old school! I'm just not equipped for it.

Over the counter Muzzleloader Deer tags for Non residents?

^^This. I killed my first deer ever on public land in Nebraska with a muzzleloader. It's a statewide tag and a late season, so the cold weather takes away a large amount of the competition on public land. Big and plentiful deer to be had if you are dressed appropriately for the conditions.

    Iowa Early Muzzleloader Season ?

Sad but likely true. I had an absolutely excellent non-resident archery season there last year. More mature bucks sighted than I've ever seen in my life (and I've hunted a lot of different places) during the first week of November. The deer are there to hunt. They just need people to...

    Missouri... anyone?

Sounds good! I've got about 15 lbs. of FFg and a bunch more of FFFg that needs my attention and an ignition source. We'll burn some coal. I just renewed my ENGC membership, as well.
