    Naming your guns?

Any of you guys name your flintlock like they did in the past ? If so what? If not why not? In the middle of building my first and even using a kit it seems to be ", coming alive"

Question on barrel lugs and pin setting

I started fitting my Kibler colonial today, and though I am far from pinning the barrel, I noticed the lugs are short, like 1/6th in. How do I measure to tap these lugs when the time comes. I have Kibler's drill bit attachment, but these lugs seem short. And catching them seems daunting.

    Kibler Colonial kit arrived today.

Well packed. Speedy delivery from order date. Beautiful piece of mid level maple with figure I would expect on the higher quality maple. I will only have weekends to work and buying tools as I need. This will take a while. I have a carving plan worked out and pretty much good idea for...

Jim Kibler got it to me quickly

My .58 cal colonial muzzleloader kit is in the mail. I bought a smooth rifle for the adaptability don't see myself shooting 200 yards; too old to see that far anyway. I have some ideas for finishing but will curb my impatience and go slowly.

The good Lord made Jim Kibler busy (and slow) in order for me to take time to learn and think about what I am going to do, I suppose.

Waiting and waiting for the colonial kit to be delivered has allowed me to go into the rabbit warren of what was done and is being done, allowing me to really think about what I want to do on the .58 cal colonial, when it comes. There is a great deal of good work posted in these forums and some...

Opening a discussion of Baroque and Rococo carving motifs, if anyone is interested.

We have very few examples of rifles from the early to mid-1700s long rifles, and the rifles made now repeat the carving patterns of those few. Yet if one steps back to look at the baroque/rococo period, there was a great diversity of motifs in decorative carvings, especially in the examples of...

    As is said, “Well, hell.”

I haven’t posted lately since I was waiting for the gun kit I ordered, and all I heard was, “it is in transit,” “it is delayed,” etc., so I said enough. I canceled the Hawken kit and ordered one from Jim Kibler. It's a much different gun, but since I am not interested in being a re-enactor and...

Saturday, I received my copy of The Hawken Rifle, It’s Evolution from 1820 – 1870, by Bob Woodfill.

Saturday, I received my copy of The Hawken Rifle, It’s Evolution from 1820 – 1870, by Bob Woodfill. It is a beautiful book, well written and well laid out. It gave me pause for thought about the rifle I will assemble if it ever gets here from Italy. I was trained and worked as an art historian...

    Just one well-placed shot

I reflect a great deal about a childhood and youth of hunting in the woods of the Appalachian Plateau and the Blue Ridge with my father and grandfather back in the 1950s and ’60s. We all hunted with simple guns, and my grandfather always carried his single-shot rifle and shotgun. He rarely...

Hello from the tail of the Selkirk Mountains.

I am new to this and in the process of building my first muzzleloader. I grew up on the Appalachian Plateau. I have hunted, fished and rough camped since I was a kid. I have a wandering mind. Boy Scout, Professional Art-Historian, Psychotherapist, Law Enforcement Officer, Wildfire Fighter...
