    Flattening a priming horn

I took my first shot at making a flat priming horn last night and it didn’t work out. I heated my vegetable oil to 330 degrees and dunked it for a few seconds at a time until it was soft, but some deep blisters popped up and ruined the horn. Did I heat it too quickly/overheat it or does...

Can swabbing between shots encourage misfires?

I recently noticed the fouling in the pan of my flintlock is just a bit moist. It always does that, but I just now started really thinking about it. If your fouling is moist from patch lube and you swab between every shot or every few shots, the fouling that doesn’t stick to the patch ends up...

Planned to build a Kibler but couldn’t pass this up.

I got my hands on my first hand made rifle last week. Rice 42” swamped .50 caliber barrel, L&R lock and a modestly curly maple stock. Handles like an absolute dream and stacks ball on ball with that swamped barrel. I don’t think it’s a real close copy of any particular gunsmith’s work, but what...

    Good price for a Pedersoli?

I’m considering selling my Pedersoli Frontier/Cabela’s Blue Ridge .36 flintlock. Roughly 95% condition. I’m not seeing a whole lot of them on the market at the moment, what’s a fair asking price? Thanks

    Musket caps vs #11

Like everywhere else, caps are scarce around my parts. If I can find a good load of musket caps, is there any reason not to invest in a musket cap nipple for my TC Hawken so I can shoot whatever kind of caps I can get my hands on?

Muzzleloader and 18/19 century supply shop

10 or 15 years ago there used to be a store in Mt. Washington, Ky called Kentucky Primitive Arts. They had a good selection of traditional muzzleloader supplies, and gear for reenacting but they closed down and now the only option I know of is mail order or attend a rendezvous in person. Is...

    "Grocery shoppin" with my .36

I'm kind of under the impression that a 36 rifle is overkill for squirrel. If it's not, could yall tell me what's the best powder charge if I don't want to tear em all to shreads? thanks!

    Workin on my patch knife

I'm working on putting some walnut handles on my patch knife and I've run into a little problem. This is the first time I've ever done anything like this and I'm stumped about how I should make the inlets for the rivet heads. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

    Revolver spring kits?

It seems like I read somewhere about being able to buy a high quality set of after-market springs for the '51 Navy. The trigger and bolt spring broke on my Uberti Navy and I thought it would be a good idea to go on and replace all the springs. Thanks a lot! Hey, this dude's really cool...

    A few '51 Navy Qs.

I have very little experience with shootin black powder revolvers, so I'm hoping yall can clarify a few things fer me. My new revolver is an Uberti 1851 Navy .36 cal. The Uberti manual says that when you load round balls, a ring of lead should be shaved off. It seems like I read somewhere on...

    My new Uberty '51 Navy.

I just got a new Uberti 51 Navy and it's pretty sweet. The finish is great and the action is buttery smooth. There's just one problem. While I had her apart cleaning the grease out, one of the two little pins in the end of the frame (barrel pins?) fell out. Now I have one loose pin and one stuck...

    SHOOT!!

Well, I have a problem, and I hopes one of yalls can help me out. I have this powder flask and it's all fine and dandy except I dropped a big ole 1858 Remington on it and now it has a huge dent in it. The dent is so huge that it's noticeably reduced the capacity of the flask. manure. :redface...

    Buildin' a frontstuffer.

Man, last winter was murder! I'd like to get me a muzzleloader kit to take up some of my time this winter. I have a couple questions. First, I'm totally new to this, so I need to do some readin' before I go and buy a kit. What books do yall recommend fer a beginner? Also, what kits do yall...

    Casting balls?

OK, first, what exactly does flux do and is it necessary for casting RBs? I have a Lee .350 single cavity mold,a Lee ladle and I'm orderin' a Lee melting pot from Track. Is there anything else I need? I'll be using a Coleman stove to melt the lead. I'm new to casting balls, so any suggestions...

    Cone shaped breech?

It seems like I remember reading something about some muzzleloaders having a cone shaped breech on this forum. Maybe I'm just goin' crazy or somethin' because I can't find squat about it now. So if I'm not going crazy, and they do exist, what's the advantage of a coned breech. ::

    Muzzleloaders? What muzzleloaders?

Rant-ON Have you ever noticed how it seems like the major gun magazines(Shooting times,American Rifleman,Guns & Ammo) don't even know traditional frontstuffers exist? :curse: I'm an NRA member, so I get American Rifleman, and I'm a subscriber to Shooting Times. The only time I can remeber seeing...

    Powder Storage?

How do yall store your black powder/Pyrodex? I currently have a little more that 2 pounds of powder around here and need to know if I should store it somewhere out of the house. I'd rather not wake up one morning to discover that half my house has been blown away. :haha:

    Flints fer my new rifle.

I have the opportunity to buy ten 3/4" English flints for $13. The only problem is that the frizzen on my Blue Ridge is 7/8". Is it OK to use flints that are just a little bit smaller than the frizzen? Will they wear the frizzen unevenly? Also, at 10 for $13, is it a good deal?

    She's finally here!! (Advice needed)

I got my Cabela's .36 Blue Ridge flinter yesterday and I love it!! The fit and finish is pretty nice (Except for one part that I'll talk about later.) and the lock makes a good spark. I think this was my best choice for a first flinter. Now back to the fit and finish. After I got the grease...

What do I need to know?

I'm going to be lookin' for a .36 caliber Kentucky flinter at Friendship this weekend but I'm still no flintlock expert. What do I really need to know before I lay down my money on a flinter? If I pick up a nice one, I'll be sure to post some pictures in the Photo forum! :p
