Don Srinz of Nebraska has passed

I have a lot of fond memories of Don growing up going to the Red, White and Blue every Memorial Day. I was just a boy so I can't say I ever got to know him too well but my dad sure did. According to his stories, Don used to keep a cooler full of hot beer (I think it was PBR) at his camp that...

    NEBRASKAN'S ROLL CALL!

I love the drive to Alliance. It's fascinating to me how the Sandhills get progressively more extreme over the course of five hours, only to very abruptly level off entirely a few miles outside of town.

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Not only is it apparently glued on, it also has a patent breech so I'm not sure how I would even begin to look for such a thing. Luckily I do know a great gunsmith in town, for things that might be a bit over my head.

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

I mentioned pretty early on that it was grouping fairly well at 50 yards (though I probably could have worded it more concisely so that's my bad), just really low. It was the same this time, at 50. Just to clarify since it comes up a lot, and I tend to go into too much detail, I think it shoots...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

There is no bench at the 25 yard range unfortunately. I was getting consistent drops of maybe an inch or two offhand, but for what it's worth at 50 yards the drop is about the same offhand as it is off the bench, so as scientifically as I'm able to tell, I think it is low at 25 and is obviously...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Alright folks, I was able to find a solution to my screw issue. Turns out, the wedge screw from any old Uberti revolver will do the trick, and I had one laying around so ground it down and tapped it out, and took it to the range yesterday. This time I got smart, and put up an unshot sheet of...

    Did I screw up ?

For what it's worth by the way, I hunt with a Kentucky-style rifle (38 inch barrel!) out of a blind and while a little inconvenient it works for me. Don't let that stop you when the time comes to get another one! And that time will come, no doubt about it, unless you have more self-control than me.

    Did I screw up ?

I'm of the opinion that the rules are more like guidelines. Work up a load and see what kind of accuracy you can get at your desired range, and if you want to be certain it's going to be sufficient for a deer, use a chronograph to figure out if you're getting velocities consistent with what's...

Howdy from Nebraska. Recently got a Hatfield myself, gotta say it's worthy of being a grail gun!

    The next generation baptism

Well I'm a member of the next generation myself. Grew up going to the rendezvous so it's no surprise I'm into black powder now. Doing my best to make sure there's more of us! Seems like the rest of my generation is more interested in that newfangled smokeless powder though.

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

It's less so afraid (I'm aware my rifle can go at least well beyond 60 grains of powder) than cost conscious, or rather resource conscious. With black powder in short supply for the foreseeable future I don't want to have to burn through a pound of it twice as fast if 60 grains is enough to do...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

The barrel is neither wedged nor pinned, only two screws from the bottom of the stock and one screw from the tang (and apparently a buttload of glue) are holding the barrel in place. As far as I know, the only problem with the rifle is the vent screw. That is more or less the method I used to...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

I don't swab between *every* shot, typically every two to three shots based on how difficult the ball goes down. Of note, toward the end of my range time, I just went ahead and fired eight in a row without swabbing. Amusingly, the last four or five of those shots were my best of the day with the...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

That's what I figured. Before I shot it a friend of ours who's quite knowledgeable about these things took a look at it and said he'd heard of people venting the screw but never seen it himself and doubted it does much good. Been meaning to get a new one, but didn't realize it could be having...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Probably true to an extent. Like I mentioned I'll try to get my dad out to the range to give it a whirl, but that just doesn't seem to fully explain the huge inconsistency between 50 yards where I got an okay group (for me) and 100. I have a lot to learn but I suspect there's something else at...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Wow, bunch of other great replies while I was typing out the last "short and sweet" one! .440, RWS 1075+, Goex 3F, Bore Butter liberally applied to patch, 60F calm and sunny yesterday and at 25 yards previously, 25F breezy and cloudy at 50, offhand while kneeling at 25 and bench rest from 50...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Hi everyone, sorry for leaving you all high and dry. I meant to respond last night when I got back from family stuff but to be honest, I wasn't expecting nearly such a response so I figured I would wait until I had a chance to really read through all your advice. As it is there's a lot here so...

Two and a half foot drop at 100 yards?

Howdy folks. I am relatively new to the world of muzzleloading (or to rifles at least) and I'm looking to gain a better understanding of bullet drop when it comes to my rifle. I took my Hatfield .45 out today for the third time. The first, I shot at 25 yards - she was printing maybe a tad low...

Howdy From the Colorado High Country

I wanted to get over there last time I was around, but the roads disagreed, despite it being in June. Go figure! Seems odd to me to have winter in June but I guess we had June in December with the weather last week, so maybe it's not as odd as I thought at the time. Anyways my dad and I are...
