A “Bird in The Hand” Powder Horn

Thank for the prompting Polecat Tom. A little progress has been made. I’m struggling with how to best install the plug vs what looks best. I also can’t install the plug until I decide on the beak/spout design and finish that. I have cut a plug that mounts just below the “belly” surface, it has...

    Tang bolt drill jig

I can’t take all the credit. I did make these two but the idea came from someone here I’m sure!

    Tang bolt drill jig

The one above is one I made for the small pins but essentially works the same. Here’s the larger one I made for drilling tang bolts. This one uses a threaded bolt peened in place with a holed drilled through to the other side. Worked perfectly.

    New Small Shot Pouch

Made this for a club member friend for her double barrel. It’s 6” x 2.5” with 1/8” strap. A smallish pouch but holds 9 shots worth of 1.25oz #6 shot. That’s 11oz worth of lead yet small enough to be kept in a bag if desired. Hole reinforcement washers are antler tips shaped like dogwood flowers...

The “Claws are out” Powder Horn

It’s amazing how much pet store antlers have gone up in price! The great thing about their Buffaloe horn is it’s still relatively inexpensive. This piece was $5.

The “Claws are out” Powder Horn

Thank You for the compliments. I really enjoy making these “folk art” type pieces and love taking them back to the pet store to show them what was made from their “chew toys”!

The “Claws are out” Powder Horn

Today though was beautiful here in NC and while painting the front porch rocking chairs, I snuck in some time on this horn. I made and installed a plug from a nice piece of figured walnut and stained the leather wrap. Also spent ALOT of time figuring out and cutting the spout tip and installing...

The “Claws are out” Powder Horn

What, you don’t have curved drill bits? 😂 Actually the recess goes in pretty deep on this one, shouldn’t be too bad.

A “Bird in The Hand” Powder Horn

LOL Me too! but not yet. I put it aside to decide on how to do the plug, beak/spout and strap. Plus I just needed a break from it.

The “Claws are out” Powder Horn

Playing around with this small Buffaloe horn and thought the shape would make a nice “claw” or “Talon” themed horn. Used some wetted 8-9oz leather for the wrap. Thought about dying it but may just leave natural and/or just oil. Still have to install a base plug and drill/make the spout. Should...

A “Bird in The Hand” Powder Horn

A very rainy, soggy day here in N.C. so made a little more progress today in the garage. Opened up the plug hole some more and beveled the edges. Once the plug is in and pinned, I’ll round over the edges giving the “belly” its final shape. I also gave definition to the wing tips, which I may...

    Flintlock pistol

Not American made but there are also Pedersoli kits that come preassembled with most of the work done you may consider and customize to your liking. https://www.dixiegunworks.com/index/page/search?FullText=Pistol+kit

A “Bird in The Hand” Powder Horn

All good points for consideration. Definitely considering doing the beak/spout like I did this one.

A “Bird in The Hand” Powder Horn

I like that thought. Also have been thinking about the “other” end and maybe one of these strategically threaded into its “hind quarters” if you catch my drift. This would solve several problems not to mention pretty comical! Lol
