Over-powder wad - oversize or to bore?

So what sized wad would be best for a 45 cal bore? Trying to locate a 45 cal wad cutter in these parts is next to impossible could I use an oversized .50 cal. wad instead?

    More pain for science!

I had the same issue until Walking Eagle suggested that I use a "Duplex" load. I pour 10 gns of FFG black into the barrel then followed by 70 gns of Triple 7 FFG. This seems to have cured the problem for me.

Does anyone even do this anymore?

A while back, a friend here suggested that I put 10 grains of real black powder down the barrel first then tap the breech to settle the powder into the flash channel before I add my 70 grains of triple 7. I also add a small amount of black powder into the snail before I install the nipple. I...

Powder charge. How much powder do you use.

I’m still experimenting with my .50, I’m currently testing out an accurate mold paper patch conical bullet with a diameter of .497 and a weight of 450 gns. I’m following Mr. Idaho Lewis’ load at 80 gns of Goex FFG and also I'll be testing triple 7 FFG with the same powder charge. I'm curious...

    Why not a Kukri

I worked with a Nepalese veteran who served in the 6th Gurkha Regiment for 15 years. He retired and moved his family to Edmonton, Alberta and found employment as a welding apprentice. He brought his kukri to work one day and put on a demonstration of their fighting style. I’ve never seen moves...

What Muzzleloading Stuff Did You Do Today?

I finished perfecting my muzzleloading propellant and did some testing, it burns almost as fast as Goex does. I'll need to chrono the load and see how it groups on a target.. I followed Hoffman productions on youtube. I'm a happy camper..

    Grains by weight or volume???

I’m after precision. As Idaho Lewis states, “I’m all about squeezing as much accuracy out of my rifle as possible”. His technique of weighing his charge, using an over powder wad and his paper patched I bullet in his stock 1-48 twist TC Hawken is sure an eye opener. If I can recreate his...

    Grains by weight or volume???

I’ve found that I can weigh my powder and bottle the weighed powder in a small vial. I can load up 30 or 50 vials for an afternoon of shooting or hunting. A few of these vials can take up space in my possibles bag when hunting.

    weighting in on volume

That’s exactly what Idaho Lewis said. He gets his accuracy from weighing each and every charge and using a felt wad on top of his powder charge. The proofs in the pudding, his shots at great and short distance are a matter of record.
