    Trouble…

Went out for a shot tonight and got a ball stuck. When I got back I screwed in a ball puller gave it a yank and broke the damned thing. I then realised that I’d used my patch puller instead of the ball puller while i was distracted talking to my wife. I screwed in my ball puller after that and...

    Investarms Gemmer Hawken

I'm still here and there on what my rifled flintlock will be. I've tossed up the idea of a Pedersoli Frontier in .54 or a chambers Edward Marshall .58 but I today also saw a YouTube video of a guy with a gemmer hawken and didn't know much about them. Before I go any further, I know some people...

    Start em young

Took my eldest boy out for a walk this afternoon. Managed to take a hare at 30 yards with my .54 Pedersoli RM Hawken.

    Camp oven

I'm wanting to get a small camp oven that would suit 2 people, maybe 3 at the most to cook meals while trekking/back packing. This is for real practical use, I want to take it hunting with me while I'm in the mountains so I can cook up bread and little stews with game we shoot etc. I figure...

    58 good and bad

I've been keeping an eye out as well as proactively speaking with some people e.g. Jim chambers, about a rifled flintlock. I would never part with my rocky mountain .54 caplock so I thought the next logical thing would be to get a 58 (I also own an inline and caplock 50). I just wanted a point...

    .570 balls in a 20G smoothy

Has anyone tried these and if so any accuracy? Can't get moulds or balls for my 20G fowler, would .570 balls with a thick patch or two patches likely give a shootable group (dinner plate) at 50 yards? Or would it likely just go wild?

    Coning a barrel?

Does anyone have good reference material on how to do this correctly? I'm scared of trying it and stuffing things up on my hawken, but hunting will be much easier if I don't have to use a short start for quick reloading. I've heard accuracy is not affected at all, is this correct?

    Long rifle kits?

I'm getting more and more interested in a kit but am not sure of which would be best. I'm after a long rifle or jager of some kind in 58" that is exclusively for hunting. I've been leaning toward Chambers, but there are multiple models so no idea what's best. The Edward Marshall looks like...

    Entered the Flintlock fraternity

After doing a few practice shots last week I was keen to take it for a hunt. Managed to sneak into 20 yards of this hare and managed to take my first flintlock kill on my first flintlock outing! Thanks to all that have given me advice along the way. One thing of note, when stalking no matter...

    How to barn tan leather?

As a kid I did some rough skin on hide tanning in bark but it was more a miracle than anything that it worked. I'd really like to get into making my own leather for shooting patches, creating knife sheaths and a shooting bag, belts etc. Does anyone have a how to for this or some reference...

    Loading shot without wads

I've had my fowler for 2 weekends now and because of postal delays still have no wads to use for shot. What is a household alternative I could use just to run a few shots downrange as I'm champing at the bit to get out for a shot with my new toy. I was thinking of scrunching up some newspaper...

    Which is the right flint?

I picked up my first flintlock on the weekend and have finally had a chance to look at it. I ordered some 1" flints after advice from another forum member who also has a pedersoli Indian trade gun. In comparison to the flint it came with there is a fair bit of difference. I'm below the level...

    Question on mould

Hi, I'm looking to order a mould for the 20G smoothie for round ball. From what I've read here a .600 ball with a .010 patch being slightly under bore of a .620 bore would be a good place to start. I can't get anything out of the states at the moment with the usps suspension of shipping here...

20G fowler - loads and tips?

Apologies I'm sure it's been covered but I find the search function hard to find things at times so I thought I'd start a thread that was very black and white in the hopes that others searching will find it easier. What are some loads and processes for best accuracy/grouping with a fowler...

Value for money powder horn and shooting pouch

Any suggestions for these? As I look to transition into flintlocks I see the need for more space. The value part comes from the fact that with currency exchange and shipping you can add 50% on to the cost. Something practical I.e. waterproof and that isn't going to readily spill things when I...

Adding a rear sight to smoothbore

I'm still on the search for a flinter, I have possibly got a shot at a second hand pedersoli Indian trade musket. To be deer legal in my state I need to have a front and and rear sight, and single projectile only. Just wondering if anyone has and if so how to go about putting a rear sight on...

    Looking for first flintlock

First of all, for any that aren't aware I don't live in America so this is not a wanted thread. I've wanted a flinter since I was a kid and joining this forum has done nothing but made that want worsen (thanks for that). I don't want to spend "new" money on a gun and have found a few options...

    Pedersoli Mortimer 12G

G'day all, Just a quick one, firstly what are people's thoughts on the pedersoli mortimer shotgun and secondly, do you think it could be used as a fowler with .72 round balls for large game?

    Failure to fire rate

gday gentleman, i tried finding this through a search with no luck though I’m sure it’s been discussed. im keen to get into flintlocks, truth be told back in 2013 when I bought my first BP gun (an inline) I lamented the fact that I went that way and not a flinter. But I was nervous about the...
