Black Powder Banned at my Gun Club!

Black Powder has been banned on our Club Range until further notice. A shooter on the Public Range started a fire with his 1860 Colt Replica Revolver. It was a Freak accident as indicated by his explanation. It wasn’t real grass but the Astroturf in front of the Firing Line. Maybe they should...

    I Stand Corrected!

I told myself I'd never own a side-lock muzzleloader with a scope! I received a call from my local ML Shop informing me of a recently acquired USA-made CVA Mountain Rifle with a long Brass Scope. I had a fairly good idea of what it was. Sure enough, it had a Tasco 1860 Retro Brass Scope...

    Bore Brush Storage

I accidentally grabbed a brand new 50-caliber brush and ran it down a 45-caliber bore. It hit the bottom and didn’t want to come back out. I came up with the idea of using a plastic coin roll holder to keep them separated. These were for a nickel that could possibly hold up to a 12-gauge brush...

    Washing Patch Material

Does anyone know why they recommend washing the sizing out of fabric before using it for Patch Material? I’ve bought some Pillow Ticking Patches from Thompson Center Lubed with Bore Butter. They’re very stiff. I suspect the fabric wasn’t washed first. When you place one on the Muzzle and press...

    Green River Forge Facebook Page

While not as popular and sometimes harder to identify than GRRW, I've started a GRF FB Collectors page. I've uploaded most of the photos I have plus some off here from Lonesome Charlie and Buff. I still have a couple of my guns to put on there. You can find the albums here...

Asher Hamilton 45 caliber “Poorboy” Percussion Rifle

Asher was an artisan working for Green River Forge in Springfield, Oregon. He went to build his own guns under the name Lincoln County Gun Works in Newport, Oregon. I read in an older thread on another forum that he used Bob Roller Locks. I’m not sure who made this one or the triggers. I’ve...

WANTED Zouave Carbine Steel Ram Rod

I'm looking for a Steel Ram Rod that fits a Zoli Zouave Carbine . It's 25.5" x 3/16". I could use a full-length Rod and cut it down. Does anybody have one or know which supplier might? Thanks in Advance! Walt

    New to me Rifle

I’m working my booth at an Arms Collectors show this weekend. Something caught my eye on Friday during set-up. It appeared to be a beat-up Navy Arms Buffalo Hunter. Funny thing was, there are no such markings nor any for Zoli. What I found was William Large’s Hallmark. My guess is it was either...

I’m looking for Repair Advice for two Stocks.

I picked these up at a Gun Show recently. The stocks have cracks. My thinking is wood glue and a clamp on the lighter colored because it's more flexible. Epoxy as a filler with no clamp for the darker. I’m open to suggestions from more seasoned Gunsmiths, Professional or not. Thanks! Walt

    Percussion Hammer Problem!

For some reason, the hammer on my Traditions Crockett Rifle has started to rub on the side of the nipple after firing the cap. I don't know what's changed. It wasn't doing it when I first got it. How hard is it to heat and bend it? Thanks! Walt

    Unknown Percussion Pistol

I picked this up last weekend for $20. It appears to be a 50-caliber Smoothbore. Without removing the barrel or lock, the only markings I found were “Aberdeen” on the top barrel flat and “T Thomson” on the lock plate. The barrel finish almost looks painted on. The bore could use a good...

Neil Fields 40 Caliber Vincent Rifle

My new-to-me rifle finally arrived. It came from fellow Forum member, Dave at AZ Muzzleloaders. It was packed in a nice wooden box. The barrel is signed by Neil and marked 347. I wanted a Vincent but with a 32” barrel. It’s almost the same dimensions as my Traditions Crockett rifle except I...

    Need Help with Builder ID

I'm looking at a gun online. The seller has no idea who the builder is. I've attached a photo of their initials from the top of the barrel. They appear to be JFH followed by the year 1979. It has a Green River Barrel and a Russ Hamm flintlock. Thanks in advance! Walt

    Gray Steel

There is one builder on Facebook who does almost everything metal in Gray. I'm in the process of acquiring a 40-caliber Vincent Rifle made by Neil Fileds, which has a Gray Barrel. I have always seen references to Bluing and Browning. This is the first time I've heard of this. Can anyone shed...

Best Caliber for Targets, 100 Yards & Less

Greetings! Although I’ve finally learned how to search for topics before posting, this one did not come up in 10 pages of titles. First, I’m curious about everyone’s personal opinion on the most accurate caliber for Paper Targets, 100 yards and closer with a Patched Round Ball. Second, the...

    Ideal 490 Double Cavity Mold

I ran some 50 cal balls over the past few days. I know from reading Dutch Schoultz's material that double cavity molds can throw balls with differing weights. I was expecting two but ended up with three! They came out 177 grains plus, 178 plus, and 179 plus with the majority being 178. I know...

Shooting my new Crockett rifle for the first time.

I took my new 31 Caliber Crockett Percussion rifle to the range yesterday. It has a 32” barrel. The first shot was at 15 yards Bench Rested and was dead Center (10X) at Point of Aim (PIA). I then moved it to 25 yards for two more shots, also in the white bullseye. For off-hand practice, I...

    What is a "California" Rifle?

On page 42 of Hanson's Hawken book, he replicates an advertisement by Hawken & Campbell which ends with, "Hawken and California Rifles made to order" More than once have I read this term, especially when talking about Hawken and Plains rifles. Does it mean something other than the obvious, "a...
