Navy Arms Mule ear - Barrel ID?

I was just checking mine. 3 digit sn but no other markings on the barrel except for the caliber. The lock is just marked “Navy Arms etc.” no proof marks, nada. I seem to remember reading there was a run with USA made barrels, but don’t quote me on that, it was 35+ years ago.

Navy Arms Mule ear - Barrel ID?

Not trying to be a smart aleck, but you might have wanted to put a comma after “kids shooting”, I had to do a double take! LOL

    Muzzleloader shooting distance

Moose have been and continue to be taken with .22 LR by poachers. Close range of course. People sell ML short on their potential. My brother thought they were only accurate to 75 yards max. I showed him that my .54 with 1-66 twist could group under 4 inches at 125 yards with plenty of power. The...

Navy Arms Mule ear - Barrel ID?

Sadly, the Mule Ear has a checkered history. I bought mine in ‘86 NIB for $75. They had a rash of production problems. Stock pin drilled through the bore, bent barrels, lousy hardening in the locks. Mine was one of the very good ones. But, the sear was brittle and the sear tip broke. I recut the...

Aiming with one or both eyes

I’ve heard it referred to as parallax. It gives depth of vision when aiming. I have an astigmatism that my glasses correct, if I close one eye, it screws me up.

    Yes or No on tacks

On the forearm could help with grip. Personalization or ornamentation. I could go either way. Too much is just too much. I have an old CVA Frontier I tacked because it just looked too plain.

    De-Hawkenized CVA

That’s what I’m thinking. Just can’t see taking another .040” like this. Pi’s are still about .010-.015 deep. This obsession has about ended, lol. Going to start shooting. Just want to see how it does.

    De-Hawkenized CVA

The bore does show some sanding marks that I’ll probably finish polishing out. The problem is, the pits were far deeper than I originally thought. To polish them all out, it will have to be taken out to .58 caliber. At this point, I’m at about .54. This is after about 35-40 hours of sanding...

    De-Hawkenized CVA

Pretty much the same thing I did. Didn’t in-breech it, though. Sadly, the pitting in this bore is very extensive. I’ve taken it as far as I can, I’ve hit the point of diminishing returns. It is right at .54 and still pretty pitted, so I polished it up and preparing to test fire it. I’ll...

    De-Hawkenized CVA

When finished, the comb will be recontoured darker stained, perhaps tiger striped and a poured pewter nose cap.

    De-Hawkenized CVA

Many years ago, I bought a CVA Hawken in a pawn shop. It was in sad shape. The stock looked like it had been refinished with gummy wax but the worst was the bore. .50 caliber horribly rusted, but for $35 I couldn’t resist. Well, I got it home and the bore was even worse than I imagined. eBay...

New movie soon: "The Powder Horn"

Peter Sherayko (Tombstone) has been into making more period correct movies. One was ‘A Soldier’s Revenge’. Overall a pretty good movie.

New movie soon: "The Powder Horn"

I’ve been watching more indie movies on TUBI and Amazon lately and I’ve been pleased. The acting is a little stiff, but technical advisors are working hard to keep anachronisms to a minimum.

WANTED Small pen light for bore inspection

I’ve used the green chem light lures. Very small work quite well.

Leather wads in a cap and ball?

Checked the SDS, yep, no lanolin. I suppose the mineral oil and petrolatum replaced it. It does have a flammability note. Still may try it as a patch lube on a limited test basis. It does list a polymer. If nothing else, may try it as a range bore wipe.

Leather wads in a cap and ball?

Did not know that. Wonder what they’re using now?
