    Another successful hunt

I have a picture of the buck I took on Christmas Eve. However I did not take any of the either doe I shot today. I was in a hurry to get them dressed, butchered and get my rifle cleaned up before this afternoon. As soon as that old Enfield gets dirty I immeadiately jump on cleaning it as I dont...

    Another successful hunt

During my state's early muzzleloader season in October I took two does and a buck with my .75 Cal Brown Bess. I also took a 10' fall.... I hunted throughout my states general firearms season and no deer... didnt even see one. Now with my state's muzzleloader season back in I decided to head out...

    Plugging percussion nipples

To be honest I dont know. The gunsmith I talked too said that is what he was taught to use. The smith he studied under was taught that way in 1927 when he studied under a fella who was born sometime in the late 19th century. If it truly came from the mouth of someone back then I trust it. I was...

    Plugging percussion nipples

Yea the leakage test is test #1. I bore scoped the inside and it looks fine but my scope cant see hairline cracks. If this shotty passes the leakage test then I will use my drop in bore gauge mic I use for small engines to take measurements from top to bottom of the bores and see how much metal...

    Plugging percussion nipples

Yea the gunsmith knew that. He ment the solder that holds both barrels together can degrade a when fired could cause issues. When he started in the trade in 1974 he had went to a clay shooting event to promote his buisness. A fella there had a 14 gauge british double and when he touched off the...

    Hunting with 'Bess

I just took 3 deer in my state's early muzzleloader season in October. I was using a .715 ball with 120gr FFG powder in a paper cartridge. Furthest shot was 40 yards and the ball landed where I was aiming. I would also like to Turkey with the bess and smaller game too. Maybe not fowl though I...

    Plugging percussion nipples

About a month ago I acquired a Mortimer of London 10 gauge shotgun. It is a 39" Double Barrel and one barrel has the original nipple and one has a threaded removeable nipple. I want to do an "Alcohol Test". I was told my a local gunsmith that these older Double Barrels typically had the two...

Got my first deer with a flintlock

I was concerned at first. I was in such a rush to get back out in the woods though. I had just fired it the previous weekend so the ammunition was still close at hand and so was the musket so it was off to the races. I had even cursed myself for picking up the musket as I had never hunted with...

Got my first deer with a flintlock

Lucky for me I am only 22 I was moving around pretty good only 24 hours later and 48 hours later I could barely feel most of the soreness. Definitely a day to remember.

Got my first deer with a flintlock

Last week my state's muzzleloader season began and I set out each day with my new Thompson Center Renegade .54 cal to try and put meat in the freezer. Thursday and Friday was a no show. Saturday morning a friend of mine put up a stand on my farm and told me I could hunt it as he wasnt feeling...

New Muzzleloaders and have some questions

I have a question to ask about the Mortimer Shotgun. An older fella who is a retired Gunsmith told me before test firing the shotgun regardless of the previous owner's use to plug the nipples and fill the barrels with denatured alcohol so see if any leaks where the two barrels were soldered...

    Thompson Center questions

Btw you were correct in stating that the barrel has a 1:70 twist. Green Mountain returned my email and confirmed it and gave me the production date 03/29/1996. Thanks for your reply.

    Thompson Center questions

Green Mountain got back to me the rifle twist is 1:70" confirmed. The barrel finished production on March 29, 1996. Barrel is 27 years old idk about the rest of the rifle though. @longcruise was correct in saying it is probably a 1:70" twist. With that being said at a 1:70" twist will I need a...

    Thompson Center questions

I found my calipers and the ramrod tubes are a hair over 3/8" and come out to around 13/32" so just in between 3/8" and 7/16". I have a 3/8" piece of wood dowel I will try to slip in if I can find it lol.

    Thompson Center questions

Oh yea I know its a Green Mountain barrel. I contacted Green Mountain and gave them the serial number on the barrel and the sales rep said its mostly likely 1:48 or 1:56 but he is still looking for concrete paper work. Barrel also bears the Green Mountain logo too. I am gonna order a 36" rammer...

    Thompson Center questions

Cool I figured it was 5/8" x 3/4" on mine but I wanted to verify before ordering. I guess I will start at 80grs FFG and go up or down from there. I think the ramrod is 3/8" but I cant seem to find my calipers or measure tape lol.
