I have almost a full can of 4f. Can you use this in an 1858 under a ball as well as a 200 grain Lee conical?

Yes, no problem I use 4f. I find at 25m excellent accuracy at 15gr with a lubed 4mm wad and .457 ball.

Pietta or Uberti 1858 new model army?

Hello MrMystery02. My opinion is that you should get the Pietta. I bought mine in 2020 and it now has 3000 rounds through it. It runs flawlessly and I clean after each shoot and fully strip every thousand. I would say the quality is there.

    A new project. Duck gun.

It is nice to finish something....I have a Jeep Cherokee in the barn that shames me a bit every time I walk past it....perhaps that should be my next job, amongst many others!!

    A new project. Duck gun.

All repaired and back together. It was an interesting project. I was intending to build a stock but took some advice on drilling and pining instead which worked out exceptionally well. There was a lot of time spent dremmeling out the old glue though to once more get the broken pieces to mate...

    Wads under patched ball?

Interesting...I have never heard of a wad being used to protect the shape of a ball? I wonder how that idea came about. I also use them in revolvers and I find they greatly reduce fouling, mine are always lubed.

    Wads under patched ball?

I do that already. The question is about wads under as well.

    Wads under patched ball?

Thank you Rafterob. I am having no accuracy issues and the pistol and I are shooting consistently to 25m so I am happy I was just wondering. Your method is intriguing so I shall also give that a go. Currently I lube the patch with olive oil. With your method is there a point where fouling is...

    Wads under patched ball?

Hello all, I have a Harpers Ferry .58 rifled pistol that I have been getting into shooting recently and was wondering whether any one uses lubed wads under the patched ball as a fouling modifier? I currently load powder and then smear grease around the rim of the barrel and load the patched...

    A new project. Duck gun.

I asked a friend for this one. Yes..if the muzzle energy reaches 1000 joules at 100m. So you would have to know what weight of projectile and charge were being used to achieve that. Realistically all hunters use what are termed cat c weapons here , single shot, self loading limited to 3 or...

    A new project. Duck gun.

It will be a slow project but the start is always in the dismantling and my thoughts on the metal parts were good, all is fine bar light rust. The wood however is toast with some shonky repairs in the past that relegated this to being a wall hanger. I, at least, have a template for the new...

    A new project. Duck gun.

This exactly. It is not a punt gun as such though use as one is not a problem. Old photo's from the Uk show groups of men lined up on the banks shooting together, not off the shoulder with a bipod but propped on a a plank at ground level. Poor ducks! Punt guns are heavie, carried a greater...

    A new project. Duck gun.

I do not know too much about it. There are no marks that I have discovered yet but I am not overly familiar with older French gun marks. If there were any, clocks here do not always have makers names and often only displayed the town of the selling shop regardless of who made it or where. It can...

It is like a punt guns baby brother.

    A new project. Duck gun.

I have been thinking recently about a new flintlock to have a bit of fun with and lo and behold a friend turns up with an old duck gun that is in serious need of repair so I guess my need will be satisfied over the next few months as the stock is totally gone and a new one will have to be made...

Any other heretics out there that oil their barrels?

Water has never been near any of my bp firearms. I clean and then oil with mineral oils, whatever is in the garage. No rust no issues. There are a lot of snake oil salesmen out there trying to convince people all the time they need 'firearm' specific products. Horsepoop!

    Wads material

Pure felt wads. Perfect in the revolver lubed. Just as good in a rifle. I buy offcuts at least 5mm thick.

    Range Shooting Box

I always keep my eye open for 'suff' Years ago at work they were discontinuing the resuscitators we carried in the cars so i grabbed one an re purposed the case it came in. Twenty years later the box still goes weekly to the range in the case. I am not bothered by period correct...just shooting.

Pulling a dent from a powder flask?

Solder a brass rod to centre of dent. Allow to cool. Pull rod. Apply heat to remove rod and clean up.

pre-measuring or a better method of measuring for revolver?

Twenty years into bp revolver shooting now and thousands of rounds later, so i have settled on what works for me and i regard as time saving. No paper cartridges. The time in making them far outweighs the time loading at the range. I am not restricted to time at range so i may as well enjoy my...

Where do you store your powder?

There are, and always will be those that think the government have the slightest interest in our guns.
