    Flint maintenance

So I finally got my Bess out for a round of SUCCESSFUL shooting today. No hiccups, nothing went wrong, everything went perfectly. (I know right, what were the chances knowing my luck thusfar ;) ) The only thing I ran into was the flint dulling. Now I know this is bound to happen, and I was...

Jag and Rod stuck in barrel

Not even with a patch; Trying out the new jag I finally got, fit it on the rod and ran it down the barrel, and it is stuck about halfway. Won't budge whatsoever. The jag is the proper size for my bore and everything, no idea why it stuck or how to get it un-stuck. It's a .75 cal smoothbore btw.

    Wait or clean as is?

Ok so some of you probably know what happened with my gun yesterday. If not, quick recap, charge wouldn't go off cause I'm pretty sure the powder is water logged, and my ball puller still isn't here though it should arrive within the next week. So my question is, should I go ahead and clean the...

    Charge not going off, help

Help a newbie out. Got a bit too much fouling and before realizing it was too late, ball was on the barrel. It was tough to get down, but I did get it seated, I used a small amount of water to help. Now the charge won't go off, just flash in the pan. Is the main charge water logged? Is there...

Patch stuck at bottom of barrel

Was cleaning and oiling up my new Bess today and dumb me managed to get the patch to fall off the ramrod and it's now at the bottom of the barrel. Sure I'm not the first one. Any ways to get it out?

    Confusion from vendor

Finally got my new Bess. As I understand, with historical loading procedure, powder was emptied from the cartridge into the barrel, and the ball, still in the paper, was then rammed down the barrel and snugly fit on the powder charge, with the paper underneath creating a seal between the powder...

    Oiling?

New to the whole muzzleloading thing. Can't find a definite answer anywhere. After cleaning the gun and letting the barrel fully dry, should it be oiled? I plan on oiling the lock after cleaning, but it's the bore I'm confused with. I see some people say absolutely yes, use bore butter etc...

    Total Newbie here!

This isn't my first post here but I am still very new so figured I would do this. Just getting into muzzleloading/ firearms in general. I have always been a massive lover of history so I decided to get a Second Model Brown Bess. It should be here any day now! Joined this forum to pick up on...

    Paper Cartridge Danger?

I'm new to muzzleloaders and I have recently acquired a Bess. I'm just wondering, I have already made up a bunch of paper cartridges for it, as that is the historically correct way to fire it. Are these less safe than shooting with patch and ball? Is there a chance burning embers from the...
