    C.G. Fotou Rifle

I picked up a beautiful target rifle at the last local gun show. The only markings are "C.G. Fotou" on the lock. The only thing I found on line was a bullet mold with that name. Perhaps he also made locks or this may have been a complete gun by him. Anyone heard of him. It is a beautifully made gun.

Need Better Photo of Classic Patchbox

Life would be much easier if I were artistic. In Merrill Lindsay's "The Kentucky Rifle" #12 a Jacob Kuntz of Lehigh swivel gun has a particlarly magnificent patchbox. Unfortunately, it is a really crummy photo. There HAS to be a better photo somewhere out there of this magnificent piece. I...

    How to "polish" the stock?

Your technique was the problem. I once finished a shotgun with Danish Tung Oil. I live in the Central Oregon high desert and moisture is not a problem. I used 7-8 coats and rubbed down in between for a matte finish. I was finished and all went well until a hot day came along. I put the shotgun...

    Relief carving and sandpaper question

Some decades ago, I had an elderly neighbor who was a world class violin maker. Most of his family had died in the camps and he was trying to find an apprentice to carry on. He made two violins a year which sold for $62,500 each. He was eager to teach others his techniques. His work was awsome...

    Rear Sight Question

I have most of my parts on hand but not a rear site. In looking throughWeil's Contemporary Makers Of Muzzle Loading Firearms, Bivins rear sight is SO cool in both artistic design and pragmatism with fixed blade and one pop-up blade for longer range. Does anyone make anything like this? Pete

Paul, thank you. Great explanation. What's POI?

    Flint Questions

How do you choose the width of the flint? Should it match the frizzen width? The ones available locally are simply sliced and work better after a couple hits on the frizzen which seem to self chip them. Is it best to chip teeth on them? I am a stone worker and have all kinds of grinding and...

Beginner question, inletting metal parts and gaps

Maple is a closed pore wood, but if you have an open pored wood like walnut and your wood is below metal level, you can hot steam the area to raise the grain then use Superglue to fill the pores and you have raised the wood level. Now for inletting long tangs, etc, just put it on and off A LOT...

    51 Brass Frame

I never knew someone made a 51 Navy in 44 cal. It was certainly not an original caliber.

    Allegany Uprising --- John Wayne

John Wayne was a neat guy. He loved those black eyed, black haired women and whiskey. But I think he liked loud mouthed drunks who tried to pick a fight with him even better. He would cold cock them with one punch.

How to determine length of trigger pull?

I alluded to one person needing a range of LOPs during his lifetime due to shooting style or infirmity. Some shotguns around the beginning of this century had extreme drop like 4 inches or more. This was due to an upright shooting style as in wearing a top hat during shooting. On the other...

    NY goes bezerk with licenses

Many states are doing the same thing then complaining that license sales are down! DUH! Can you spell Tax and Spend politicians?

How to determine length of trigger pull?

Cpt, if you take the time to properly read my posts, you will see that your past reading skills were limited.

    Frontier Carving Shoppe, Lebanon, Pa

Are they still in business? Many years ago you could get about any style stock there, Lebanon, Lancaster, Bedford, etc. If they are gone, who does that now?

How to determine length of trigger pull?

Cpt, after investing $400 in a bore/choke gauge, I've found that the old dime trick works VERY well, indeed. But more importantly, let us remember that to be period correct, it is disme, not dime. The crook of the arm trick is also more often right than wrong.

How to determine length of trigger pull?

I am mainly a shotgun stockmaker so I run into this question all the time. Your average modern rifle fits most people with a 13 1/2" LOP. The Average shotgun is about 14 1/8-14 1/4" LOP. Tall fellows might like 15". Now some trap shotgunners will prefer a 17" LOP. Along with your general body...

    "Platinum" touch hole liner plugs

My old English flinter pistols mostly all had these liner plugs. Are any available today (stainless, I imagine)?

How tough are the mountain men?

When I went to work as an engineer at a Navy base in 1971 I met a fellow who would nearly cry if he broke the point on his pencil. I then found out he went through the Bataan Death March and lived for years as a Japanese prisoner. When I asked him how he was able to adapt, he simply said he...
