How far down do you clean?

I only clean the exterior, barrel, cylinder and nipples, and the loading lever. I used to do a complete detail strip and clean, but life got busy and I do not bother any more. A few of my revolvers were done by @45D and so are grease packed, but a few are not. I treat them the same and so far...

    Kibler Fowler Update

I wish the Fowler was going to have the rear sight as an option as it really is nice when hunting wild turkeys to have a rear sight. Not too late to offer as an option………..! Please!

    Kibler Fowler Update

Great video, cannot wait to get a Kibler Fowler. I Think he may be surprised at how popular this gun is going to be! His use of modern tech to make a 200 year old gun is fascinating. My next desire is a Kibler handgun.

    Magnum (modified) or Waterfowl (improved)

I would choose the gun with modified choke barrel for waterfowl or turkey hunting. You will likely be using bismuth non-toxic shot for waterfowl hunting with a muzzleloader and it patterns fine in a modified choke.

    Deciding on my 1st muzzleloader

The 12 gauge will have a much denser pattern as it throws more shot than an equivalent 20 gauge load. Get the 20 or 27 inch barrels, both will be plenty short and handy since there is no action behind the barrels, and they will both generate useful velocity. Either a 12 or 20 gauge will be...

    Cap n Ball 101?

Lots of great info on his site, YouTube and other web sites. The Uberti website shows all their replicas. I enjoyed this book a lot...

    Steel Shot in a Smoothbore?

just use bismuth it works well. https://www.rotometals.com/the-original-bismuth-shot-alloy-for-reloading-shells-1-pound-bag-made-in-usa/ steel shot will harm your barrel, and worse, due to its low density and the limited ballistic potential of black powder or subs, it cannot be driven fast...

    Dove shot size?

I use #6 bismuth from Rotometals in my TC New Englander 12 gauge. Does a good job on doves.

Chokes or no Chokes for Turkey Hunting

That seems like a bad idea - the screw in choke guns are more expensive and desirable than the fixed. Just find a fixed choke New Englander and have that jug choked if you cannot get a decent pattern with the SkyChief load (I bet you will get a good pattern). You are placing too much emphasis...

Chokes or no Chokes for Turkey Hunting

I hunt with 2 TC 12 gauge caplock shotguns, a New Englander and a Treehawk (same gun with camo coating). Both of mine have screw in chokes. I use modified for turkeys and cylinder for dove and other upland birds. As long as I go no tighter than modified there is no need to remove chokes for...

Why I would recommend someone not get into muzzleloading

Caps are available. A quick search shows this legitimate retailer has 35k caps in stock. https://www.outdoorlimited.com/remington/remington-black-powder-11-percussion-caps-x22619pack-1000-count/ Will OP now complain that he doesn’t like the price, doesn’t want 1000 caps, and won’t pay...

    kibler fowler

Now that the Fowler is on the schedule, we all must start pestering them for a quality handgun kit.

    Kibler contacted me!

Please tell them they can use your photo, but only if the come out with a Fowler kit and a handgun kit in 2023!

    Small caliber smoothbores?

I understand your argument, but I think if a warden caught you hunting turkey with a roundball larger than #2 size you would get a ticket and would lose in court. Do what you want, but the regulations seem clear to me.

    Small caliber smoothbores?

311 sec. (b) says cannot possess shot larger than #2 when turkey hunting. Also, I edited above to add that lead free is not enough for California, the projectiles must be certified lead free by the state and on an approved list. This is why everyone is buying bismuth shot from Rotometals- they...

    Small caliber smoothbores?

I don’t think roundball is legal for California turkeys, and even if it was, where will you get California “certified” lead free roundball in small caliber? —————- §311. Methods Authorized for Taking Resident Small Game. The take or attempted take of any resident small game with a firearm...

    Thompson Center 12 gauge question

You will regret not buying that New englander 12 gauge percussion. They are great all purpose hunting guns, and mine also shoot roundball very well,

    Is the "P" word OK?

@nhmoo, yup, and he talks too!

How often do you do a complete disassembly for cleaning?

On revolvers I remove the cylinder, nipples, and barrel, clean those parts well, and lube and wipe down everything with Bore Butter. No frame disassembly for me, does not seem necessary.

    Is the "P" word OK?

I fired off the last 30 grain Pyrodex pellets I had in my Uberti 1860. The pellets were from 2007 and the Labradar said the .454 ball was going slightly over 1000 fps. Accuracy was fine, loading was quick, but I prefer loose powder, either 3F Swiss or 2F Triple 7.
