Target shooting. Roundball .440 vs .445

Will a lead ball expand to fill the grooves? I thought that’s what our patches were for. I’ve never seen rifling marks on any of the roundballs I’ve recovered. I shoot both .440 and .445 in my .45 with no discernible difference in accuracy. I suspect that has as much to do with my marksmanship...

    Gardening ..again

Maybe plant a few and then plant the rest once it dries out a bit and see what happens? Jay

    Gardening ..again

Oh, I don’t EAT mayonnaise! Like ketchup, I use it as an ingredient. My late mother’s macaroni and potato salads have to have it in the dressing or it doesn’t taste right. I buy the smallest bottle when I’m planning to make one. Otherwise, we don’t have it in the house. On a gardening note, we...

    Gardening ..again

I was raised on Hellman’s and would use no other for decades. But when I was about 40 I switched to Dukes and have never looked back. It tastes like Hellman’s used to. Jay

Roses love coffee almost as much as I do! It will change the colour of your hydrangeas, though. Jay

    WANTED maxi ball molds

Are you still looking? I have a Lyman .50 Maxi (370 gr) that I used once, then traded my .50 for a different gun. No handles- it didn’t come with any. Still has the inspection tag in the box! Jay

Last of the Mohicans kit bags

If you listen to the whole exchange between Hawkeye and Uncas, they’re talking about the tightness of the weave, not the specific fibre. And a tighter weave will absolutely improve your accuracy at range, all else being equal. Jay

Last of the Mohicans kit bags

Welcome from Tidewater Virginia! I’m curious- you mentioned kit bags in the title of this thread, but not in your post. Is there information you’re looking for? Jay

The Search for a Vintage Cornbread

Was just coming back to bring Amelia into the discussion! Her book is also one of the first to mention chemical leavening- Pearl Ash. Which she uses in a cookie recipe of all things. Jay

The Search for a Vintage Cornbread

So the earliest references to white people making cornbread in North America are 17th century but omit anything like a recipe. It’s most likely that they were adding ground corn into a cheat bread recipe in the same way that when wheat flour was scarce they made horse bread by adding ground...

    Why .40 cal?

I only have a .40 because I inherited it. I wouldn’t have bought one because until recently they weren’t legal for deer in Virginia, and I just soft load my .45 for small game. I would have to practice a lot more than I do to be comfortable shooting a deer with her, but now I’m thinking we’ll go...

    Why only one?

Here in Virginia your muzzleloader doesn’t even have to load from the muzzle anymore. It’s ridiculous. Jay

    Gardening ..again

Planted peas out the other day, potatoes yesterday, and started kale seeds inside this afternoon. I’ll start spinach tomorrow. We lost our poor old lady dog last Saturday night, so we buried her Sunday morning, and now we’re raising a mound over her grave. Wove a wattle enclosure as a raised...

    WANTED Liegi derringer wrench

A few months ago I acquired a Pedersoli Liegi screw-barrel pistol, but it came without the wrench used to screw the barrel on. I’m having no luck trying to order directly from Pedersoli, and haven’t found one through any of their distributors, so I thought I’d see if anyone on here has one they...

    Gardening ..again

We pull them when they’re ready just like any other tomato- they don’t seem to fall off any more than is usual for tomatoes. Planting something else on top helps shade the soil so it doesn’t dry out as fast. We like to plant hot peppers up there. It’s like a bucket of salsa! 🤣 Jay

    Gardening ..again

Ugh. Hornworms are my nemesis in the tobacco fields. Here’s our solution for keeping worms, slugs, voles, fusarium wilt, mosaic virus, and bunnies out of our tomatoes at home:Cut the center out of the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket, put a tomato seedling in it upside down, fill the bucket 2/3 to...

    Gardening ..again

I do a lot of “my” gardening at the museum, where I raise tobacco, corn, beans, squash, and a variety of heirloom vegetables and herbs. Of course, we try to do as much as possible in front of the public in a historically accurate way, but I do start a lot of things offsite and transplant them...
