    First time flintlock build

I think those are your nose cap screws or the thimble screws, your lock plate screws are much longer. If there are only two of those and you havent taken the lock apart they will more than likely be your nose cap screws.

    First time flintlock build

You build what you want, you're the one doing the project, you paid your money for it, have fun with it, take your time and build it right. This rifle only has one and no washer, but this is how they work. easier to see maybeso than Zonies because of the brass?

    First time flintlock build

Washers and screws,,,,? The only "washers" I can think of are on the left hand side of the rifle and the screws that hold the lock plate on... can you post a picture?

    Repairing rawhide saddle seat

Bill, as usual Chucks got the right answer. It is a Mexican Charro Saddle, still made the same way they have been for a couple hundred years. You could do as suggested and rehide the whole tree, which takes some time and effort but it will fix it for a very long time if you take care of it. I...

"German tanned" buckskin from Crazy Crow, closest thing you can get to brain tan buck skin.

    Bark tan vs. veg tan

Has to be made of hard woods, oaks, sumac and the like. Soft woods such as any of the pines have pitch in them that wont work. People have even used alfalfa to tan hides with. Free stuff like ground up oak bark works well. Big hides can take many many months to bark/veg tan. There are a lot of...

    Removing a buffalo horn?

Cold soak the skull for a while in a large enough container to completely cover the skull and horns. They will pop off the cores in a short time, if its warm, if its colder it will take more time. You can also boil the skull and the will pop off.

    Good leather for side-seam mocs?

I'm not sure but it acts like shellac. I've resoled some of the Comanche powwow dancers fancy mocassins in the past due to the thick rawhide soles breaking down at the stitching with bull shoulders and they have lasted for a couple of seasons of dancing. Thicker is better but its gota be plyable...

    Good leather for side-seam mocs?

Being as how most of the people that would wear mocassins, either ndn or white, would travel mostly on foot, they would wear out and would be replaced often. One average size deer hide will produce at least four pair and since the deer hide was turned into buck skin, a by product of killing...

    Good leather for side-seam mocs?

You might try to get some moose hide, its tough and will last for a good amount of time. Brain tan or german tan buffalo will last a while as well. Get enough to make a couple pair and rotate them.

Large older boars, boars are adult males, sows are adult females, Boars have a thick tissue layer from the jowles back to the mid rib cage to protect them during fights for breeding rights. Sows, adult females do not have this tissue. This so called shield is not the shouilder blade, it is a...

    anyone do brain tanning?

I brain tan many many hides each year. Smoking is done with a small fire and BIG SMOKE, meaning that the fire is small and smudgy, very little heat, heat will ruin the hides and burn them just as it does your own skin. Anything over 120 degrees will start the hide on the down hill slide to the...
