    Aging leather

I use oven cleaner on all of my bags. I leave it on for a few minutes and rinse it out. It gives the leather a nice mottled/aged look. Here is a before and after example. The bag on the left has been aged with oven cleaner.

    Where can I find...

This is where I buy all of my brass buckles for shooting pouches. It's the best deal I could find...and their cheaper if you buy in bulk. http://www.conchos.com/buckle134.html

    Using tinder fungus

As already stated...hoof fungus is not "true" tinder fungus. True tinder fungus looks like a black, gnarly, burnt mass on the side of a birch tree. True tinder fungus will catch a spark without any preparation...especially the softer, "corkier" pieces. If you're using hoof fungus..try...

    Torch/Touchwood

I harvested a large amount of true tinder fungus this summer in the eastern mountains of WV. That's the only place I can find it here. I live in the western part of the state, and it doesn't grow here. True tinder fungus..aka chaga..is great stuff to work with. I'll say that it does seem to...

    Questions for you leather workers

After I dye a bag, I usually apply brown or black shoe polish to help seal the dye.

    Leather Pouch Plans

Rick, I make all of my own patterns out of poster board. The trick is to fold a section of poster board in half lengthwise and draw a "half" pattern from the fold. Once your draw out your "half" pattern...cut it out and open it up. You now have a perfectly simmetrical pattern. Just...

    Shooting Bag advice

Same here...Joan Fabrics or Walmart. We just had a "Hobby Lobby" open here, so I now have a 3rd choice for ticking.

    Shooting Bag advice

Finnwolf, Thank you. I lightly aged the bags using oven cleaner. I spray the bag with oven cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes...rinse it out and dry it in front of a space heater or blow dryer. It gives it a nice mottled/aged look. This picture shows two identical pouches. The one on...

    Shooting Bag advice

I just use regular craft glue. Place some "dots" of glue around the inside perimeter of each bag piece. Lay out your fabric, and place the leather pieces onto the fabric. Once dry, cut the fabric around the leather pieces. If you line the bag, you'll have to bind the exposed raw edges..such...

any info on the shennadoah by traditions

I had one for a few years, and I had an awful time with it. The lock wasn't engineered correctly, and it wouldn't fire reliably enough for me. If I put the flint "bevel up" it wouldn't open the frizzen...if I put the flint "bevel down" it would open the frizzen, but the sparks flew in front of...

Olive Oil for a bore protectant ???

I use olive oil/beeswax it works great for me. I recall awhile back...someone on this or another forum conducted an experiment with all of the commercial and homemade lubes. He cut squares from the same piece of steel and labeled them. He applied a different lube to each steel square and put...

Actual use of a Pipe Hawk....

Meriwether Lewis ordered 2 dozen pipe tomahawks to be issued to the men on the Lewis and Clark expedition. There are several journal entries that mention the men carrying their pipe tomahawk...even on the return journey home when they were nearly destitute of supplies.

    Daniel Boones Rifle???

Here's a rifle in the Huntington Museum of Art in Huntington, WV that was supposedly owned by Daniel Boone. It is part of the Herman P. Dean collection. It's the one on the bottom: This one was supposedly owned by Simon Kenton. It has 1775 on the barrel, but the stock looks 19th century...

    traditions opions, shenandoah vs pa

I started with a Shenandoah, and it was a complete piece of manure. It was accurate, but it wouldn't fire half the time. The locks are small, cheap, and they aren't engineered correctly. I learned that flintlocks are a pleasure to shoot after I finally purchased a custom flinter. You can find...

    Leather Stain

I've used minwax wood stain on leather several times. It takes a couple of days to dry, but it works fine. It doesn't soak into the leather as deeply as leather dye, but I've never had a problem with it rubbing off. It works great if it's all you have to work with. I'm currently using...

finished flap edge on the back of the bag

2 ideas: 1. Sew both raw edges together on the inside of the bag. 2. You could "interlock" the pieces together. Fold approx. 1 inch of the linen on the outside/back of the bag and iron it so it stays folded. Fold the bottom of the leather flap and slide under the fold in the linen so...

    pattern for D style pouch

They're made out of horse leather. I'm guessing around 2 oz leather. I like using a thinner leather and lining them with cloth.
